Dieser Kurs ist eine Kompakteinführung in das Arbeiten mit Computern auf der reinen Textebene - ohne graphische Benutzungsoberflächen, d.h. ohne Maus, ohne Buttons, ohne Icons, ohne Scrollbalken und ohne Drag'n'Drop - mit freier Software auf GNU/Linux. Dabei geht es nicht um Server-Administration, sondern um normale PC-Anwendungen wie Dateiverwaltung, Textbearbeitung, Internet-Nutzung (E-Mail, World Wide Web, News, FTP, IRC, Gnutella), Multimedia (Graphik, Sound von CD und mp3, Video von DVD, TV, DiVX). Alle Programme, die wir vorstellen, werden nicht nur von der Kommandozeile aus bedient, sondern laufen auch vollständig im ASCII-Textmodus ab und können daher bei Bedarf über simple Terminalverbindungen benutzt werden. Wir wollen zeigen, daß diese Arbeitsweise nicht nur eine andere Ästhetik hat. Viele kleine Programmwerkzeuge, die jeweils nur eine spezielle Aufgabe erfüllen, können auf einfache Weise miteinander verbunden und so zu komplexen Anwendungen kombiniert werden - dies ist die Effizienz und Eleganz des ASCII Computing.
