White House, they have given the war a face and voice in
West Wing, serving as a constant reminder that, for a small percentage
of Americans, the long, divisive conflict has also been a matter of
life and death."It's a bit of a gut check on everything you
say and do about the policy of the war and the politics
of it," said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communication. The
end of the nearly nine-year war marked a promise fulfilled for Obama,
who took office pledging to end the conflict. Mindful of the politics
of war, some of the veterans who now work for Obama are
careful not to draw a direct connection between the president's positions on
the Iraq war and their decision to work for his administration.Still, Steve
Miska, Obama's director of Iraq policy, said he had "an overwhelming sense
of relief" when the president announced that the war was coming to
a close. An Army lieutenant colonel and father of two, Miska did

.Florida showed a net increase of 7,500 state workers since 2007, but
most of those are due to an accounting change in 2009 that
reclassified 14,000 county health officials as state employees. The state had previously
paid their salaries, but the positions weren't reflected in the state budget.Republican
Gov. Rick Scott signed a budget this year that led to widespread
layoffs of state government workers, and a report released in December shows
the state government had 3.5 percent fewer employees as of June 30
compared to the previous fiscal year. One of the country's biggest flashpoints over
state employees this year occurred in Wisconsin, where Republican Gov. Scott Walker
won passage of a new law ending most collective bargaining rights. He
said it would give state officials more flexibility to deal with a
$3.6 billion state budget shortfall. While Wisconsin ranks 41st in the country with
6.2 state employees per 1,000 people, the law also covered thousands more
s a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests, and opening up its
nuclear facilities to outside inspection. But with Kim Jong Il's death, negotiations with
the United States -- which retains about 28,000 troops across the border
in South Korea -- are likely to be put on hold, as
the North enters months of intense mourning for the Dear Leader, and
rising uncertainty.
