wie ich im Freundeskreis vergleiche ziehen zu den Russen in

an Flugh=E4fen, Polizei an Bord der Flugzeuge, Reduktion der Mobilit=E4t,
Sicherung der Kernkraftwerke...  Aber Bruce Sterling geht im
nachfolgenden mail einen anderen Weg: Wir sollen die Werte, welche
sich in den 90er Jahren etabliert haben sch=E4tzen: Froh sein, dass wir
diese Zeit erlebt haben, diese Erinnerung wach halten, uns daf=FCr
einsetzen, dass sie wieder kommt.  Wir sollten uns in Diskussionen

The sudden outbreak of unconventional warfare=20
has not escaped Viridian attention.  In this Note,
I would like to make it clear how the Pope-Emperor
plans to adapt the Viridian Movement to our altered=20
social circumstances.

    You have likely already seen a lot of earnest
commentary consigning the period 1989-2001 to history.=20=20
We are suddenly in a turbulent and violent time, and in a=20
burst of harsh martial virtue, our immediate past is being=20
written off as squalid, and overindulged, and pampered,=20
and fatally innocent, and possibly somewhat effeminate.=20
This is exactly what happened the last time a Belle Epoque=20
collapsed.

   The death of the last Belle Epoque -- through terrorism
in glamorous Serbia, unfortunately -- was followed by the=20
gruesome mobilizations of August 1914, the War to End War.=20=20
There's still terrorism in the Balkans nowadays, one might=20
note. The War to End Terrorism at least has a different=20
slogan, though.

   This event might be a passing nasty shock,  like Aum=20
Shinri Kyo or Jonestown.  More severely, it might rival or=20
surpass the Gulf War of 1991. The last such war was also a=20
very sweaty-palmed event, but it was followed by a=20
considerable boom.  Wars do end, and if this one ends=20
quickly and well, we might well find ourselves with a New=20
World Order that's more than just talk, and a Long Boom=20
with some serious muscle behind it.

    Or, it may be that Viridian Green, founded in 1998, is=20
past its sell-by date.  We may be well on our way to that=20
much-forecasted next stage, Khaki Green, where pop culture=20
and commercialism lose all their charms and the heavy=20
lifting gets done by those long-time Viridian idols, cops=20
and the military.

     Let me speak up now in firm defense  of that Belle=20
Epoque.  That ten-year-period was truly grand.   We were=20
historically lucky to live through it.  It began=20
beautifully and it perished, if anything, through too much=20
hope. It was not naive and foolishly innocent, it was=20
splendid, vital and profoundly creative. Those were the=20
best years of the 20th century, when at least some of its=20
beleagured inhabitants finally found a proper way to live,=20
a decent way that offered many great virtues.=20=20

    Nutty bubble economies run by cheery visionaries are=20
much better for us than crass economies run by stolid=20
monopolist bores.  Near-total employment is far better=20
than severe unemployment.  R&D from peace dividends is=20
better than a pinched war economy.  Booming tourism from=20
happy foreigners is better than empty hotels and airports.=20=20
Politicians bedevilled with colorful sex scandals are=20
better than fierce and resolute war leaders.  And shucking=20
and jiving our way out of an ecological crisis by making=20
green design trendy was a much better method of=20
controlling CO2 emissions than empty skies, market panics,=20
and military hairshirts.

     That was not a dumb, innocent epoch.  *This* is a=20
dour and bitter epoch.  We Viridians may have to wear some=20
hairshirt, we may not be given any choice there, but=20
ladies and gentlemen, we Viridians don't *do* hairshirt.=20=20
We're not going to pretend that hairshirt is better.=20=20
Belle Epoque is vastly better.  This is worse.

    We Viridian want more  Belle Epoque.  We will scheme=20
tirelessly to get it back, revive it,  or fetch another=20
one.  We do hope to live long enough to see one.  If we=20
can't be its promoters, then we'll be its monks: we will=20
protect its relics and its memory, we will copy it, we=20
will distribute it, we will keep its lamps burning.

    Still, the cultural circumstances are rapidly and=20
visibly changing, and our favorite tactics  will clearly=20
be less effective for a while, not that they ever worked=20
all that well. They were not, in fact, the most effective=20
tactics possible.  Making things cool, making ideas=20
trendy, were simply the tactics that we Viridians happened=20
to be particularly good at.  They were things we enjoyed=20
doing.  They were an efficient use of our limited talents=20
and resources.  They were the sorts of things that a few=20
hundred people can do on the Internet without having to=20
incorporate or buy uniforms.

    The most effective tactics for forcing huge numbers of=20
people to undergo sudden and radical social change are=20
done with bayonets.  They're evil tactics, and=20
regrettable, and morally repulsive, but just look at what=20
has happened in two weeks.

     You may notice that although coverage of the=20
Greenhouse Effect has vanished during the crisis, utterly=20
involuntary yet very powerful anti-Greenhouse measures=20
have taken place, to an extent previously unimaginable.=20=20
The sky was empty of aircraft =3D=3D those great guzzlers of=20
fossil fuel. Americans, incredibly, are taking trains.  No=20
one is buying big cars.  Even the ads so loathed by=20
ADBUSTERS were busted off of the television.

    In short order, the USA is very likely to have both=20
Arctic drilling *and* stiff conservation measures,=20
renewables *and* maybe even nuclear, along with the kind=20
of across the board belt-tightening that Greens never
succeed in promulgating =3D=3D measures that only rage and=20
terror make worthwhile.=20

     Furthermore, when the Kyoto carousel rolls around=20
again, the USA will not be balking on the sidelines, the=20
planet's lone prima donna, pretending that free enterprise=20
is more important than global security.  Then there's that=20
nuclear nonproliferation treaty that the US Senate didn't=20
care about; that biological warfare thing that was too=20
complex and invasive to enforce; those numerous human=20
rights accords, dozens, that the USA  considered too=20
restrictive and obnoxious; those UN dues the USA=20
deliberately refused to pay; the endless fight-picking=20
with Iran, Cuba and China; well, you can name your own.

     Unfortunately, we Viridians are not the people to=20
take any kind of effective lead here.  We are design=20
advocates, we're not spies, diplomats, cops or firemen,=20
and we are certainly not going to be so fatuous  as to=20
become armchair soldiers.

    We're a dot.org, not a dot.mil.  Furthermore, we=20
Viridians are not even patriotic. Our core concern has=20
nothing to do with nationalities; it's by its very nature=20
global. A hard Greenhouse rain falls on the stockbroker=20
and the mujihadeen alike.  We Viridians are one of those=20
slithering, highly dispersed, mobile, multinational,=20
network entities you've been hearing about.  Our natural=20
environment, the place for which we were created, is the=20
Internet.
=20=20=20=20=20
     We Viridians can't and don't exist without the=20
network, but now, we should expect the Net to change. It=20
does that, you know: from military labs, to big science,=20
academia, the dotcom period, it's very ductile.  I have=20
never seen such an outburst of black propaganda and psyops=20
on the Net as I have seen in these two weeks. It is a=20
kulturkampf battleground.  I expect some Cold War-style=20
heavy manners in a realm that is this troubled with=20
imaginary Qaeda email, huge Microsoft worms, brand-new=20
ECHELON-style terrie-trackers from brand-new agencies,=20
self-appointed hacker vigilantes, and whole swarms of=20
nutcase script-kids.  Any serious new hacker-crackdown=20
will pick up those little malefactors by the basketfull.

     The Net looks bad.  The status quo ante is not going=20
to cut it. Unless I miss my guess, the Net will be moving=20
away from the flaky amateurism and sordid tragedy-of-the-
commons that was its pride and joy, right past that=20
totally imaginary commercial nirvana, and straight into a=20
paramilitarized, ARPANET-friendly, Nervous System of the=20
Coalition phase.  We Viridians may be rather squeezed for=20
room  and oxygen in there.  We may find ourselves asking=20
for your help, in backups, archiving, distribution, web=20
service and so forth.  Feel free to volunteer.  People of=20
good will need to be uniting to move this medium into a=20
disciplined, serious role as the backbone of a troubled=20
global civil society. If that effort fails, the Net is=20
going to go the way of CB radio.  Or worse.

    We Viridians may have a harder time of it. Money,=20
toys, and time may get tighter.  We Viridians will no=20
longer look much like What Happens Next (because we're=20
not), and our abiding interests are likely to look a bit=20
flaky and antiquarian for a while, like some guy leafing=20
through  Beardsley's YELLOW BOOK as the zeppelins hum=20
above the searchlights.

     However: our core issue, the Greenhouse Effect, is=20
not going to forsake us.  On the contrary: the USA is=20
about to undergo a military-entertainment dust-up with one=20
of the poorest and most stricken countries on Earth, a=20
place of incessant gunfire, poxed with landmines, that=20
hasn't had a decent rain in 3 solid years.  People who can=20
live on naan bread and goat cheese are starving there from=20
bad weather.  Is it an accident that a place like that=20
hides people of the Al Qaeda ilk?  They're the New World=20
Disorder, and they've learned how to ship.

    Look at the economic impact from the sudden loss of=20
two skyscrapers in New York City. It's colossal.  That's=20
straight from the file we Viridians like to label "world=20
becoming uninsurable."

    Now  try to imagine New York hit by a Category 5=20
hurricane.  Imagine the payout crisis around, say, 2050,=20
with all the coral dead and the seas rising along entire=20
continental coastlines.  There are serious people in the=20
re-insurance industry who claim that weather damage in the=20
2050s will outmatch the planet's entire GNP.  Smashing=20
skyscrapers with aircraft full of blazing fossil fuel --=20
that is by no means a Greenhouse disaster, it's just  a=20
war crime.  But that event is of the scope and scale of=20
the disasters that society is courting.=20=20

     The only event that can match NYC 9.11 for sudden=20
loss of American civilian life is the Great Galveston=20
Hurricane of 1900. That's an event from which Galveston,=20
once the rival of New Orleans and the richest port in=20
Texas, never recovered.  Now we have a modern model for a=20
major-league Greenhouse unnatural calamity.  We now know=20
what that does to people, to their morale and confidence,=20
to the tenor of their society. We must not go there out of=20
bland incredulity and some dismissive notion that things=20
like that can never happen. And if we do go for there, for=20
some godforsaken reason, we need coherent plans to claw=20
our way back out.

      However: we Viridians are not going to be doing that=20
clawing.  That is frankly beyond our capacity.  That is=20
the realm of Khaki Green, the realm of hardhats tearing=20
through rubble heaps 24/7, and if the Pope-Emperor gets=20
into that line of work, he is not going to be doing a lot=20
of whimsical email.=20=20

    We Viridians are going to continue to promote cool=20
green gizmos =3D=3D although we no longer expect to sell quite=20
as many.  And we will watch weird  weather.  We may very=20
well change our list mechanics, those stars, the chevrons=20
and so forth; we may be moving into new alliances and new=20
areas of the Web.

    Furthermore.  Instead of being the cheering groupies=20
and advocates of our dear friends the designers, we are,=20
if necessary,  going to *commiserate* with designers, we=20
are going to offer *solidarity* and *unfeigned moral=20
support* to designers, and to their critics, and their=20
teachers, and their stricken magazines and their stricken=20
retailers; we Viridians don't care if you noble souls are=20
at the top of Fortune's Wheel or suddenly considered the=20
excrescences of a decadent consumer society, we get it=20
about that business-cycle crap and we love you anyway, and=20
we Viridians are *with you people to our final Internet=20
packet.*   What we can do for you, we're gonna. Don't be a=20
stranger.

    In conclusion, I'm going to be travelling a lot.=20=20
Because the planes are empty and people are asking.  I'm=20
accepting invitations from all over the place. I'm gonna=20
be laying on hands.   There's not a lot of money around on=20
the circuit this quarter, but there is a hell of a lot to=20
talk about, and friends are rarely happier to see one=20
another than they are under these trying circumstances.

     My next gig is the Renewable Energy Roundup in=20
Fredericksburg Texas, September 28-30.  A very worthy
affair.
