Brian Rotman, Columbus/Ohio State University
The Metaphysics of the Alphabet

Ort: Juliettes Literatursalon, Gormannstr. 25, 10119 Berlin-Mitte

Forty years ago, Andr=E9 Leroi-Gourhan predicted that print would =
mummify the alphabet, that the "curiously archaic forms employed by =
thinking human beings during the period of alphabetic graphism will be =
preserved in print". Are we in the last days of this period? Its digital =
twilight? If so, what will follow from the alphabet's fall? In =
particular, will its demise have a metaphysical or theological =
dimension? How might such a dimension have been introduced in the first =
place: Does the alphabet have a metaphysics?

Brian Rotman ist Professor am Department of Comparative Studies der Ohio =
State University (seit 1998). 1964 bis 1984 war er Dozent f=FCr Reine =
Mathematik an der School of Mathematics and Computer Science an der =
University of Bristol, 1967 Promotion in Mathematik mit einer Arbeit =
=FCber "Some Theorems on the Comparison of Order Types" an der =
University of London. Sein Arbeitsschwerpunkt: Transdisziplinaere =
kulturwissenschaftliche Studien der Mathematik(geschichte), in deren=20
Zentrum eine Geschichte der "material culture" der mathematischen =
Zeichen steht.
Publikationen (Auswahl): Signifying Nothing: the Semiotics of Zero =
(1987, uebers. ins Italienische, Japanische und Deutsche); Ad=20
Infinitum... the Ghost in Turing's Machine. Taking God out of =
Mathematics and Putting the Body Back in. An Essay in Corporeal=20
Semiotics (1993); Mathematics as Sign. Writing, Imaging, Counting =
(2000).

Zum Thema "Technology and Subjectivity" findet am 18.9.2002, von 10 bis =
18 Uhr, ein Workshop mit Brian Rotman im Zentrum f=FCr =
Literaturforschung, J=E4gerstr. 10/11, 10117 Berlin-Mitte statt. Bei =
