MIGRATIONS one-day conference 09.11.02

Migrations is an intervention into the reactionary
climate of hatred towards refugees and asylum seekers
that is taking hold across Europe and beyond. As
barbed wire goes up between communities and around
continents, Migrations seeks to challenge stereotypes
and help refugees to find a voice, exploring diverse
strategies for breaking down boundaries and crossing
artistic, cultural and political borders. It will
combine critical projects with celebratory events that
promote an alternative vision of contemporary culture
as both dynamic and diverse.

A one-day conference organised in partnership with
Amnesty International and the Department of Sociology
at Manchester University will bring together activists
and artists to explore the exciting creative and
emancipatory possibilities inherent in this area as
well as the political constraints that stand in their
way. The discussions will culminate in a closed
session at the end of the day when activists,
community groups and artists will come together to
plan specific initiatives for prizing open the walls
of Fortress Europe, at its borders, within media
representations, and between communities. The
conference will be accompanied by a publication (free)
that will provide a resource for artists or activists
seeking to engage in this area, as well as by a
website helping to coordinate related initiatives and
to build a legacy for the Migrations projects.
