01) COVER & INTERVIEW: YUGO NAKAMURA
Yugo Nakamura is one of Japan's leading web designers, who is
getting recognized more and more from around the world. He has
just won the Grand Prix of Cyber Lion at the 51st annual Cannes
Lions Festival. The Shift cover design for this month is a clay
animation piece by him! He always surprises us with his unique
ideas as well as his distinguished programming skills. Where do
the ideas come from? We seek the answer, by asking him about
the background story of his projects.
--------------------------------------------------------
02) OFFF 2004
OFFF 2004, the fourth edition of Spain's festival of
'experimental audio and unusual video', was held in Valencia
between July 1st to 3rd. Devoted to exploring the most
groundbreaking work currently done in fields such as web and
graphic design, digital arts and experimental electronic music,
the event comprised concerts, projections, presentations and
keynotes, round tables and an exhibition area.
--------------------------------------------------------
03) IMAITOONZ - DL-DAY
Soso Cafe in July hosted the solo exhibition of Imaitoonz, whose
career as an illustrator reaches 10 years this year. He recently
opened the door to a new direction by producing the film
"DEADLEAVES" (distributed by Shochiku). He has held exhibitions
at Soso Cafe twice before. This time, on the opening day, he
entertained us with his energetic and speedy live drawing.
--------------------------------------------------------
04) YOUWORKFORTHEM DVD - ENTER THE DRAGON
Enter the Dragon is not your run-of-the-mill typeface catalog.
Instead of featuring their unique type families in a standard
printed brochure, YouWorkForThem chose a much more creative
approach -- 26 short videos by 26 top motion graphics artists,
each video featuring a different YouWorkForThem typeface.
--------------------------------------------------------
05) CONTACT EUROPE
Cafe Moskau, an impressive building constructed in the 1960s
and partially renovated in the year 2000, provided a grand canvas
on which to stage the third Contact Europe event. The venue, once
a late-night spot for foreign dignitaries and Berlin's governing
elite, is now a space open to all for the purposes of partying, in
true Berlin style.
--------------------------------------------------------
06) DOTMOV FESTIVAL 2004 - CALL FOR ENTRY!!
DOTMOV Festival 2004 is a digital film festival with an aim to
discover talented creators and provide them with an opportunity
to show their work. Submitted works throughout the world will
be screened at Soso Cafe which is produced by an online
magazine Shift for a month, from November 1st to 30th. Last
year's total submission was 351 works from 24 countries. All
selected works for this year will be shown on Shift web site.
During the festival, a lot of related audio & visual events will be
held. The deadline is on the 20th of September.
--------------------------------------------------------
07) SHIFT 2005 CALENDAR COMPETITION - CALL FOR ENTRY!!
Shift has been trying to offer artists many platforms to
showcase their works online. The Shift calendar competition,
held in 2003 and 2004 successively, pushes the boundaries
between online and off line using a "calendar" as its medium.
Entries are invited from all over the world and selected works
will be distributed throughout the world in the format of a
physical calendar.
This year, selected works will be exhibited and sold at PRINT'EM
web site for a year with support by PRINT'EM, a graphic print
center operated by Mitsubishi Paper MIlls Limited. Also it will
be exhibited at the gallery cafe Soso between January 5th and
the 31st, 2005.
The deadline for this competition is on October 10th, 2004.
--------------------------------------------------------
08) BOOK: MYSTERY (+ROSEBUD NO.5)
It's homage (or should it be said nostalgia) to the age when
reality and fiction, sacred and common things are intermingled.
With the rallying cry "we need new mysteries", +rosebud
appealed to over 200 international artists, designers, scientists
and authors and the fifth issue of the design magazine is born as
"Mystery".
--------------------------------------------------------
09) PICTOPLASMA CONFERENCE
Pictoplasma has been mapping out the territory of character
visualization through its archives and publications so far. Now
at last, the conference offers the opportunity for the pioneers,
creators, newcomers and enthusiasts to go offline and meet in
the flesh!
--------------------------------------------------------
10) SUMMER PRINTING POOL
Entitled "Summer Printing Pool", gallery ROCKET transforms
itself into a silkscreen studio for the whole month of August!
Artists, graphic designers, illustrators from in and out of Japan
have gathered and shared their artwork for this ROCKET special
summer show.
Visit the gallery-turned-into-a-print studio with your own
T-shirt (or pants, sweatshirt, underwear, paper, anything !),
choose your favourite art from over 50 original silkscreens then
print it anywhere and in any way you want!
--------------------------------------------------------
11) BOOK REVIEW BY THINK GARDEN
"think garden" is a private library newly opened in April in
Sapporo, specialising in art and design books. Experiencing
diverse and complex values, absorbing the richness of the world,
rethinking everyday life: based on such philosophies, "think
garden" will select a few books to be reviewed every month.
This month we've picked up three books. "TAIJI MATSUE" by Taiji
Matsue, "What's in a name?" by Shigeaki Iwai and "Shuuraku no
oshie 100" by Hiroshi Hara.
--------------------------------------------------------
12) ONLINE GREETING CARD: JON BURGERMAN
This month online greeting card at Shift Factory is presented by
Jon Burgerman. He has become known for his sometimes cute,
occasionally scratchy and intermittently odd artwork. Working
across a variety of media that includes painting, printmaking and
computer animations, he has created a vast collection of strange
creatures and amusing characters to inhabit his peculiar world
of art. Cynicism and confusion often tie his work together,
building up a wider project linking together both commercial
endeavours and artistic ambitions.
--------------------------------------------------------
13) INFO-WORLD
What's happening around the borderground? Correspondents for
Shift dwelling on the edge of the world contribute monthly to
Info-World.
From New York, The 83rd Art Director's Club Annual Award Show,

the backstage of porn industry in suburban LA as a theme of his
series. From San Francisco, correspondent's message and

style gallery "Disruptiv Gallery". From London, an annual

--------------------------------------------------------
14) PRESENT
Hand-drawn Wooden toys by Imai Toonz will be given away to
three people. The deadline is on August 31st.
-------------------------------------------------------
15) EDITOR'S NOTE
This summer is incredibly hot, especially for Sapporo where is
usually mild summer ! ! There isn't an air conditioner in this
office so we keep off the heat with huge electric fan... but I'm
already out of breath. However, it's very summer-like summer
for this northern island city! It's a waste if I don't enjoy this
heat. Can't wait for this weekend. (N)
