In dem zweiteiligen Projekt 'Singing Lesson' (Gesangsstunde) hat der 
polnische Künstler Artur Zmijewski in Warschau und Leipzig mit gehoerlosen 
und schwerhoerigen Jugendlichen eine Kantate von Johann Sebastian Bach und 
ein Kyrie von Jan Maklakiewicz eingeübt und aufgefuehrt. Zmijewskis 
Arbeiten beschaeftigen sich immer wieder mit der Wahrnehmung von 
Behinderung und mit der Infragestellung des Normalen. In 'Singing Lessons' 
singen die gehoerlosen polnischen Jugendlichen: 'An diesem heiligen Ort, an 
diesem heiligsten Ort erhebt sich unsere Stimme zu Dir und uebertoent das 
Rauschen des Meeres im tiefen Abgrund. Oh Christus, hoere uns! Oh Christus, 
erhoere uns!', waehrend die jungen Leipziger die Kantate 'Herz und Mund und 
Tat und Leben' (BWV 147) mit neuem Leben erfuellen.

In Kooperation mit der Foksal Gallery Foundation Warschau und dem 
Polnischen Institut Berlin.

In his two-part project 'Singing Lesson' the polish artist Artur Zmijewski 
rehearsed and performed a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach and a kyrie by 
Jan Maklakiewicz with deaf adolescents in Warsaw and Leipzig. In his work 
Zmijewski deals with the perception of handicaps and questions the norm. In 
'Singing Lessons' the deaf polish teenagers sing: 'An diesem heiligen Ort, 
an diesem heiligsten Ort erhebt sich unsere Stimme zu Dir und uebertoent 
das Rauschen des Meeres im tiefen Abgrund. Oh Christus, hoere uns! Oh 
Christus, erhoere uns!' [At this sacred site, at this holiest of sites our 
voice upraises to you and drowns the rush of the sea at the deep abyss. Oh 
Lord, hear us Lord!] while the youngsters from Leipzig are reviving the 
cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben' [heart and mouth and act and life].
