Art's Birthday is celebrated every year in memory
of Robert Filliou who on January 17, 1963,
declared that Art had been born exactly 1,000,000
years earlier when someone dropped a dry sponge
into a bucket of water.

After Filliou's death in 1987 some artists began
to celebrate Art's Birthday with mail-art, fax
and slow scan tv events in the spirit of his
concept of "The Eternal Network" and "La Fete
permanente." Since 1994, the Internet in one form
or another has virtually taken over as the main
means of connecting partners and facilitating
communication. Every year artists are asked to
give Art the kind of birthday presents that can
be shared via the network with all participants.

2005 will be the first year that the EBU's ARS
ACUSTICA GROUP - producers and editors of radio
art at public radio stations in Europe, Canada,
and Australia - will be joining Art's Birthday
party.

Some of the presents from the artists invited to
participate by Ars Acustica will be presented
live, for example in Madrid, Moscow, Prague,
Stockholm, and Vienna; others have been
prerecorded (SuedWestRundfunk, Baden-Baden, RBB
Berlin, or Ward Weis in Antwerp). The birthday
presents will be transmitted via EBU satellite,
ISDN lines, and the Internet and submitted not
only by artists commissioned by members of the
Ars Acustica but also by independent artists, art
institutions, non-commercial radio stations
and/or webradio, e.g. CITR FM in Vancouver, Radio
Kinesonus in Tokyo, ResonanceFM in London,
art at radio in Baltimore, Western Front Vancouver,
ToySatellite in Melbourne and others. Many of the
participating radio stations will broadcast their
versions/mixes of the Special Evening live,
others will broadcast non-real-time processed or
summarized versions of the input (e.g.
SuedWestRundfunk in Baden-Baden or the Norwegian
Radio Station in Oslo).

Not only will Kunstradio be coordinating the live
network but also celebrating Art's birthday from
10 p.m. â¤" 12 p.m. live on air on Ã-1
(http://oe1.orf.at). The show will also be
broadcast live in 5.1 format via the Astra
satellite.

From 8 p.m. - 12 p.m you can also listen to the
Austrian contribution online in a separate stream
under the heading Permanent Creation at
http://kunstradio.at. On site at the ORF
Funkhaus, Studio 3, alien productions (Martin
Breindl, Norbert Math, and Andrea Sodomka) and
the Institute for Transacoustic Research
(Matthias Meinharter, Joerg Piringer and Ernst
Reitermaier) will be jamming with artists via the
network and acting out short performances based
on the action instructions provided by other
artists and the audience.

If you would like to contribute a small present
for Art's Birthday, you can leave action
instructions at http://kunstradio.at/AB2005.

Enjoy!
