Import/Export

Wege des Kulturtransfers zwischen Indien und Deutschland, Österreich
Ein transdisziplinäres Forschungs- und Kulturprojekt der Werkleitz
Gesellschaft e.V. (Halle), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Majlis
(Mumbai) und DeEgo (Wien)

In den entstehenden Netzwerken zwischen Indien und der EU entwickeln
sich Berlin und Wien neben London zu wahrnehmbaren Größen auf der
Landkarte. Eine junge Generation von KünstlerInnen und
WissenschaftlerInnen sucht den Dialog zwischen den Metropolen des
Nordens und des Südens. Es geht Import/Export einerseits darum, komplexe
Bilder eines multikulturellen Indien vorzustellen, von denen Deutschland
und Österreich als Teil des Vielvölkerstaates EU, jenseits modischer
Trends und historischer Phantasmen, heute mehr denn je lernen können.
Auf der anderen Seite gilt es, auch die Nebenschauplätze der
postkolonialen Debatten aufzusuchen und die lebendige Geschichte der
Migration und Repräsentation in Ländern wie Deutschland und Österreich
sichtbar zu machen. Das Ziel von Import/Export ist es, zwischen Indien
und dem deutschsprachigen Europa jene normalerweise unsichtbare Leinwand
aufzuspannen, die von beiden Seiten als Projektionsfläche gegenseitiger
Wahrnehmung/Selbstwahrnehmung benutzt wird.
Romantik, Exotisierungen, Phantasmen aller Art werden zum Gegenstand der
Analyse unter den Überschriften:

Moving People,
worunter die individuellen, zufälligen und unkontrollierbaren Formen von
Kulturtransfer, insbesondere aus den Bereichen Migration und Reisen,
zusammengefasst werden,

Moving Concepts,
worin die Zirkulation von Ideen philosophischen Konzepten, politischen
und sozialen Utopien - zwischen Indien und dem deutschsprachigen Europa
aufgegriffen werden, und

Moving Goods,
der Untersuchung strategischer Formen des Im- und Exports materieller
Kultur, dem Handel mit Wirtschaftsgütern genauso wie mit „Images".

Die Präsentation von Import/Export gliedert sich in vier Kapitel bzw.
Chapters:
Das Bombay Chapter wird vom 25. bis 27. März 2005 im Mohile Parikh
Centre for Contemporary Culture (MPC3) in Mumbai,
das Vienna Chapter vom 20. bis 22. Mai 2005 im Künstlerhaus in Wien und
das Berlin Chapter vom 11. bis 14. August 2005 im Haus der Kulturen der
Welt in Berlin aufgeschlagen.

Diese drei Chapter bestehen jeweils aus einem Symposium, in dem sechs
Forschungsprojekte verschiedener Disziplinen diskutiert werden, einer
Ausstellung mit fotografischen Arbeiten und Installationen sowie einer
Filmreihe, in der historische und aktuelle Werke zum Thema exemplarisch
vorgestellt werden. Als viertes und letztes Chapter führt die
Publikation Import Export. Atlas of Indo-German Fantasies die
inhaltlichen Stränge der lokalen Veranstaltungen zusammen. Drei
dokumentarische Film-Essays werden aus dem Netzwerk der Import/Export
Partnerorganisationen produziert und auf DVD als Teil des Buches
veröffentlicht. Es erscheint im August 2005.

Ausschreibung Kunststipendium

Die Werkleitz Gesellschaft vergibt ein Stipendium für die Recherche und
Entwicklung einer künstlerischen Arbeit, die sich mit aktuellen und für
die Stadt Halle spezifischen Tendenzen auseinander setzt.

Für die Bewerbung bestehen keine Beschränkungen hinsichtlich Alter,
Wohnsitz oder Nationalität. Aus den Einreichungen wählt der Kunstbeirat
der Werkleitz Gesellschaft eine/n KünstlerIn aus, der/die für den
Zeitraum von einem Monat in Halle arbeiten kann. Der/die Eingeladene
erhält ein einmaliges Honorar von 1.000 EUR, einen Zuschuss zu den
Reisekosten von max. 250 EUR und eine kostenfreie Unterkunft bis zu
einem Monat.

Die Ergebnisse des Kunststipendiums können im Rahmen von Veranstaltungen
der Werkleitz Gesellschaft präsentiert werden.

Neben einer Projektskizze gehören zu den Bewerbungsunterlagen weitere
Arbeitsbeispiele (Fotomappe, Kataloge, VHS-Band, CD-ROM o.ä.) und ein
curriculum vitae.

Der Einsendeschluss für Bewerbungen ist der 30. Juni 2005.

Import/Export

Cultural Transfer between India and Germany, Austria
A trans-disciplinary research and culture project by Werkleitz
Gesellschaft e.V. (Halle), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Majlis
(Mumbai) and DeEgo (Vienna)

Within the growing networks between India and the EU, Berlin and Vienna,
next to London, form increasingly noticeable spots on the map. A young
generation of artists, scientists and theorists is seeking an
interactive dialogue between the metropolitan cities of the North and
the South. On the one hand, the project intends to present the complex
images of today's multicultural India, from which we - as part of the
new multiethnic entity EU - might be able to learn by going beyond
fashionable trends and historical phantasies. On the other hand, it is
important
to closely examine the marginal scenes of postcolonial discourses and to
visualise
the living history of migration and representation in Germany and Austria.

One aim of Import/Export is to display the usually invisible screen
between India and German-speaking Europe, which both sides use to
project their mutual perception of the other as well as to reflect
self-images.

Romanticed ideas, exocitising phantasms of all kinds as well as economic
expectations will all be closely examined under the following headings:

Moving People
deals with the individual, incidental and uncontrollable forms of
cultural transfer under the heading of migration and travel.

Moving Concepts
examines the circulation of philosophical or political ideas, concepts
and theories, between India and German-speaking Europe.

Moving Goods
is concerned with the strategic forms of importing and exporting  
material culture,
both from economic and cultural viewpoints.

Import/Export is organised in four chapters: The Bombay Chapter will
take place from March 25th to 27th, 2005 in the Mohile Parikh Centre for
Contemporary Culture (MPC3) in Mumbai, the Vienna Chapter from May 20th
to 22nd, 2005 in the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, and the Berlin Chapter from
August 11th to 14th, 2005 in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.
Each chapter consists of the following parts: A symposium introducing
six independent research projects, an exhibition of commissioned
photographs and installations and a film series containing exemplary
historical and contemporary movies concerned with the ideas of  
Import/Export.
As a fourth and concluding chapter the publication of
Import Export - Atlas of Indo-German Fantasies will merge the basic
threads and topics of the local events. Three documentary film essays
will be produced by the Import/ Export network in the three
participating countries. The three films will be issued on DVD as part
of the publication to be released in August 2005.

Art Grant

The Werkleitz Gesellschaft awards one Art Grant per year. It is intended
for research and development of an artwork focusing on current and
important trends within the city of Halle. It is open to all artists
regardless of age, place of residence and nationality. From the
applications the Arts Board of the Werkleitz Gesellschaft selects one
artist who then has the opportunity to work in Halle for one month. The
scholarship includes a bursary of 1,000 EUR, contribution to travel
costs up to 250 EUR and free lodging for one month. The results of the
Art Grant will be presented at events organised by the Werkleitz
Gesellschaft.

Apart from the project proposal, the application for an Art Grant should
include work samples (photo-series, catalogue, VHS-cassette, CD-Rom and
the like) and a CV. Deadline for submitting an application is June 30th,
2005.
