Our opening event has long been a secret. Now it’s disclosed!
For the first time, CTM will begin with a concert night in Berlin's
Volksbuehne theatre, that offers a foretaste of the festival’s
diverse line-up – and it's for sure sensational: US Weird Folk
pioneers SUN CITY GIRLS will play their first European concert in the
25 year history of the band; frenchmen PIERRE BASTIEN gives his
Berlin debut with his mechanical orchestra; MIRA CALIX presents her
new experimental trio ALEXANDER’S ANNEXE. And if everything works out
– let’s keep fingers crossed – the night will start with a free open
air surprise concert in front of the theatre on top of it all.
Founded in 1982 in Seattle, the mysterious SUN CITY GIRLS are rightly
hailed as pioneers of the American Free-Form Folk Noise movement,
that – with bands such as No Neck Blues Band, Battles, Sunburned Hand
of the Man, Gang Gang Dance or Animal Collective – is currently
generating great interest throughout Europe. Yet the three Sun City
Girls – Alan Bishop (bass, vocals), Richard Bishop (guitar, piano)
und Charles Gocher (drums) – are a movement unto themselves.
Idiosyncratic and unpredictable: with every new album and every one
of their extremely rare concerts, they define themselves anew: icons
of a rebellious, independent underground, whose primary concern is,
to do whatever seems to them important. Their music is free in the
most radical sense, and effortlessly skips across stylistic borders:
from acoustic vocals of breathtaking beauty, boundless psychedelic
improvisations through to guerilla street theater or mystery plays.
Their sound is an unclassifiable eclectic mix of Folk, Beat Poetry,
Jazz, Surf, Tape-Music and musical elements from Southern Asia, South
America, the Middle East and Africa. The bizarre singularity of their
music and their arcane, almost ritualistic performances in costumes
and cosmetics drawn from the dramatic tradition of Japanese Kabuki,
have already assured them cult status.
French maestro PIERRE BASTIEN continues the century old tradition of
mechanical music machines. Bastien has spent many years perfecting
music machines built from that classic toy, Meccano. Their consummate
tones can be heard on his releases on Aphex Twins' Rephlex label, and
have lead him to collaborations with artists such as Pascal Comelade,
Pierrick Sorin, Robert Wyatt, Issey Miyake, Scanner or Roberto
Olivan. Bastien's kinetic artworks are as visually satisfying as the
sounds they produce: the beauty of their mechanisms, the orchestrated
interplay of diverse objects and the refined humor they evince,
complement the grandiosity of music and movement that gradually
reaches an apex of astounding complexity. Pierre Bastien's universe
is a musical chamber of wonders.
Point of reference for ALEXANDER’S ANNEXE is another instrument rich
in tradition: Sarah Nicolls, pianist with the London Sinfonietta,
plays grand piano whilst Mira Calix and composer, David Sheppard take
up her music and manipulate it using electronic instruments. They
jointly improvise an unusual and, in its radical beauty, mysterious
music that moves between sensitively fragmented and highly
differentiated raw tones. Familiar though the piano may be, the
different backgrounds of these three musicians together give rise to
a sound spectrum that is startlingly novel.

Mark Gergis and Alan Bishop (who is also part of Sun City Girls) run
the Seattle label „Sublime Frequencies“, publishing compilations by
unknown artists from regions that are overlooked or dismissed by the
European-American "world music" marketing machine. Their work is that
of DIY-archivists, who put at public disposal all they collect on
foreign trips or find in personal collections – music that might
otherwise be lost – out of love for the diversity of music and with a
huge amount of personal commitment. Although they might in this
respect be following the tradition of Folkways and Harry Smith,
authentic folklore is not their main interest. They much prefer to
document more obscure and accordingly more creative, idiosyncratic
hybrid forms, engendered by the clash of different eras, traditions
and cultures.
Their compilations of sounds gathered in North Korea, Indonesia,
Cambodia, Syria or even Iraq are called, "Radio Pyongyang: Commie
Funk and Agit Pop from the Hermit Kingdom“ or "Cambodian Cassette
Archives.“ These are not infrequently the product of a bootleg market
widely unknown to western europeans, and without which a lot of the
music Bishop and Gergis collect could not have developed.
On Wednesday 31st of January Bishop and Gergis will play from their
collection of hitherto unheard sound and music recordings from the
Middle East and Asia. They will also present their latest film
„Sumatra Folk Cinema“ – a 60-minute kaleidoscope of classic Dangdut
rock music, street and country scenes, Pop culture, raw TV excerpts,
Minang Orchestras, night markets, folk music, and much more.

Unsere diesjaehrige Eroeffnungsveranstaltung war ein lange
gehuetetes Geheimnis – jetzt wird es gelueftet!
Erstmals wird das Festival mit einer sensationellen Konzertnacht in
der Berliner Volksbuehne eroeffnet. Das Programm gibt einen Ausblick
auf die Vielfalt der nachfolgenden Festival-Tage: Die US Weird Folk
Pioniere SUN CITY GIRLS spielen ihr erstes Europa-Konzert in der 25-
jaehrigen Geschichte der Band; der Franzose Pierre Bastien gibt sein
Berlin-Debut mit seinem mechanischen Orchester; MIRA CALIX
praesentiert ihr neues Experimental-Trio ALEXANDER’S ANNEXE. Und wenn
alles gut geht, gibt es obendrein noch ein gratis Open Air
Ueberraschungs-Konzert auf dem Theatervorplatz.
1982 in Seattle gegruendet gelten die mysterioesen SUN CITY GIRLS als
die Vorreiter der amerikanischen Free-Form-Folk-Noise Bewegung, rund
um Bands wie No Neck Blues Band, Battles, Sunburned Hand of the Man,
Gang Gang Dance oder Animal Collective. Doch die drei Sun City Girls
– Alan Bishop (Bass, Stimme), Richard Bishop (Gitarre, Piano) und
Charles Gocher (Schlagzeug) – sind ihre ganz eigene Bewegung.
Einzigartig, unvorhersehbar und raetselhaft erfinden sie sich mit
jedem Album und jedem ihrer aeusserst raren Konzerte neu. Sie sind
Ikonen eines unangepassten, unabhaengigen Undergrounds, der in erster
Linie macht, was ihm selbst bedeutsam und wichtig erscheint. Ihre
Musik ist auf radikale Weise frei. Muehelos ueberspringt sie
stilistische Grenzen: mal akustischer Song von atemberaubender
Schoenheit, mal ausufernde psychedelische Improvisation, mal Guerilla
Strassentheater, mal Mysterienspiel. Ihr Sound ist ein nicht
einzuordnender eklektischer Mix aus Folk, Beat Poetry, Jazz, Surf,
Tape-Musik und musikalischen Elementen aus Sued-Asien, Sued-Amerika,
dem Nahen Osten und Afrika. Die bizarre Seltsamkeit ihrer Musik und
die geheimnisvollen Inszenierungen ihrer ritualartigen Auftritte, bei
denen sie kostuemiert und mit dem japanischen Kabuki Theater
entlehntem Make-up erscheinen, haben der Band laengst Kultstatus
verliehen.
Der Franzose PIERRE BASTIEN fuehrt die jahrhundertelange Tradition
mechanischer Musikinstrumente meisterhaft fort. Seit vielen Jahren
perfektioniert er seine aus dem Spielzeug-Klassiker „Meccano“
konstruierten Musikmaschinen, deren Klangwunder auf seinen
Veroeffentlichungen fuer Aphex Twins Rephlex Label zu hoeren sind und
ihm Kollaborationen mit Kuenstlern wie Pascal Comelade, Pierrick
Sorin, Robert Wyatt, Issey Miyake, Scanner oder Roberto Olivan
eingebracht haben. Bastiens kinetische Kunstwerke begeistern
akustisch wie visuell – die Schoenheit des Mechanismus, das
faszinierende orchestergleiche Zusammenspiel der vielfaeltigen
Objekte und der feine, sich in den Maschinen manifestierende Humor
kombiniert sich mit der Grossartigkeit der sich allmaehlich zu immer
groesserer Komplexitaet entwickelnden Musik und Bewegung. Pierre
Bastiens Welt ist eine musikalische Wunderkammer.
Bezugspunkt von ALEXANDER’S ANNEXE ist ein anderes Instrument mit
grosser Tradition: Sarah Nicolls, Pianistin der London Sinfonietta
spielt den Konzertfluegel, waehrend die durch ihre Electronica-Alben
auf Warp bekannte Mira Calix und Komponist David Sheppard ihre
Klaenge aufgreifen und in ihren elektronischen Instrumenten
verarbeiten. In gemeinsamer Improvisation finden sie zu einer
ungewoehnlichen, auf radikal schoene Weise mysterioesen Musik, die
zwischen feinsinnig bruechigen und vielschichtig rohen Klaengen
changiert. Der unterschiedliche Hintergrund der drei Musiker
eroeffnet dem an sich so vertrauten Klavier im Zusammenspiel eine
neue, noch ungehoerte Klangpalette.

Mark Gergis und Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls) betreiben zusammen das
Label Sublime Frequencies, auf dem sie Compilations mit nie gehoerter
Musik von Kuenstlern veroeffentlichen aus Regionen, die im
Vermarktungsschema „Weltmusik“ der Europaeisch-Amerikanischen
Musikindustrie kaum einen Platz haben. Ihre Arbeit ist die von DIY-
Archivaren, die aus Liebe zur Vielfalt der Musik unter hohem
persoenlichen Einsatz auf Reisen Gesammeltes und in privaten
Sammlungen Gefundenes zugaenglich machen, das ansonsten verloren
gegangen waere. Obwohl sie damit in der Tradition von Folkways und
Harry Smith stehen, ist das Authentisch- Folkloristische ihr Anliegen
nicht. Viel lieber dokumentieren sie die obskuren jedoch umso
kreativeren eigenwilligen Hybridformen, die an aus dem
Aufeinanderprallen unterschiedlicher Zeiten, Traditionen und Kulturen
entstehen koennen.
Ihre Compilations mit Klaengen aus Nord-Korea, Indonesien, Kamboscha,
Syrien oder auch dem Irak heissen „Radio Pyongyang: Commie Funk and
Agit Pop from the Hermit Kingdom“ oder „Cambodian Cassette Archives“.
Nicht selten sind sie das Produkt einer hierzulande unbekannten
Bootlegkultur, ohne die aber Musik, wie die von Bishop und Gergis
gesammelte, wohl kaum entstehen koennte.
Am Mittwoch, den 31. Januar, oeffnen sie ihre Archive und spielen sie
ungehoerte Ton- und Musik-Aufnahmen aus Nah-Ost und Asien. Dazu
zeigen sie erstmals in Deutschland ihren neuen Film „Sumatra Folk
Cinema“ – ein 60-minuetiges Kaleidoskop aus klassischer Dangdut
Rockmusik, Strassenszenen, Popkultur, kruden TV-Ausschnitten, Minang
Orchestern, naechtlichen Maerkten, Volksmusik und vielem mehr.
