ASCII Cult: How to de- and resignify

ASCII is a standard code and became a sort of questionable style of
cult. Cults can be defined as belief systems created by peoples social
interaction and it's signature is - myth like - that no-one can really
'crack' or 'hack' them. They are closed concerning their members,
components and logic. They are about celebration and use to run in
scenes and circles and usually function without contradictions. It
is different with the ironic "ASCII Cult". This one is a people's
belief system too and its signature is exclusiveness. BUT one can
analyze and play with it, because of its techno basis - the
qwerty-keyboard of the computer. So one can assume this 'modern'
cultus as a paradox: closed but open at the same time.

During the screening some examples of transitions (Uebertragungen)
will be shown. From the realm of characters to the realm of moving
images, to 3d physical objects and visual communication:
_Deep Throat_, _The Matrix_, ASCII Carpet by mi_ga. And finally we
will find out why ASCII-Flyers are red[1].

ASCII Kult: Wie man de- und rebedeutet

ASCII ist ein Standardcode, der zu einer Art fragwuerdigem Kultstil
wurde. Kulte koennen definiert werden als Glaubenssysteme, die durch
die soziale Interaktion von Menschen entstehen und ihre Signatur ist,
aehnlich dem Mythos, dasz niemand sie wirklich 'aufbrechen' oder
'hacken' kann. Sie sind geschlossen bezueglich ihrer Mitglieder, ihrer
Komponenten und ihrer Logik. In ihnen geht es um Zelebrierung und fuer
gewoehnlich laufen sie in Szenen und Zirkeln ab, und sie funktionieren
normalerweise widerspruchsfrei. Anders verhaelt es sich mit dem
ironischen "ASCII Kult". Dieser ist ebenfalls ein Glaubenssystem und
seine Signatur ist Exklusivitaet. ABER man kann ihn analysieren und
mit ihm spielen, aufgrund seiner Technobasis - der qwertz-Tastatur
des Computers. Also koennte man sagen, dieser 'moderne' Cultus ist
ein Paradox: geschlossen und offen zugleich.

Waehrend der Vorfuehrung werden einige Beispiele von Uebertragungen
gezeigt. Vom Gebiet der Schrifzeichen zum Gebiet der bewegten Bilder,
zu physikalischen 3D Objekten und zur Visuellen Kommunikation:
_Deep Throat_, _The Matrix_, ASCII Carpet von mi_ga. Und auszerdem
werden wir herausfinden, warum ASCII Flyer rot sind[1].
