Developing Interactive Entertainment Workshop
Greg Roach
March 3 - March 9 2006
Confirmed Guest Speaker: Dave Szulborski
Academy for Television and Film Munich, Germany

In this intensive workshop the relationship between storytelling, visual
media techniques, game design and interactivity will be explored in depth.
Participants will learn to apply their knowledge of media and narrative
to the new arena of digital technology by developing their own ideas for an
interactive product, which are then processed in a group design and
presentation phase. Participants will develop, in teams, presentations for
an interactive narrative product which is then discussed and evaluated by
the entire plenum.

Sagasnet is a non profit initiative furthering content creation for
interactive media supported by the European MEDIA Plus Programme Training
+ designed in the first place for participants (writers, producers,
directors, designers, artists) coming from MEDIA member countries

IMMERSIVE INTERACTIVITY IN DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT
Traditionally, the discourse about the conflict between interactivity and
storytelling in digital media focuses on a fairly one-sided definition of
interactivity: the interaction between the user and the program (or
entertainment vehicle). The nascent genre of alternate reality games (ARGs)
adds new perspectives to the debate, by approaching interactivity in
innovative ways, including "Interactive Authoring", one of the unique
features which have allowed ARGs to successfully bridge the gap between
interactivity and real immersion. This workshop session will present the
concepts of "Immersive Interactivity" and "Interactive Authoring" both
conceptually and practically, with real-life examples from several
successful and award-winning alternate reality campaigns, illustrating how
they have enabled ARGs to become a truly interactive storytelling form of
digital entertainment.
