Parallel zu re:place (int. Conference on the 
History of Media, Art, Science and Technology) 
zeigt Julien Maire in der GfKFB die Live 
Performance "Digit" und die Projektion "Low 
Resolution Cinema". Im Haus der Kulturen der Welt 
wird zeitgleich die Arbeit "Exploding Camera" von 
Julien Maire zu sehen sein.

LOW RESOLUTION CINEMA ist eine 6m x 3,5m große 
128 x 64 Pixel Projektion. Das Stück basiert auf 
starker Auflösungsreduzierung und der 
Dekomprimierung kinematografischer Bewegtbilder, 
erzielt durch den Einsatz eines aus zwei 
schwarz/weißen Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) 
bestehenden Spezialprojektors. Beide Displays 
sind innerhalb des Projektors in Bewegung. Die 
horizontale Linie, oder auch Grenze, ist auf 
beiden Displays zerschnitten. Ein Display gibt 
jeweils die untere bzw. die obere Hälfte des 
Bildes wieder.
DIGIT: Der Schreibende sitzt am Tisch und 
schreibt einen Text. Ohne sichtbares 
Schreibutensil erscheint der Text beim bloßen 
Gleiten seines Fingers über ein leeres Blatt 
Papier. Der Besucher kann nahe an den Schreiber 
herantreten und den unter der Hand entstehenden 
Text mitverfolgen. Der Schreiber ist versunken in 
sein Schreiben. "Digit" bewegt sich zwischen 
kinematografischem Prozess und inszeniertem 
Schreibvorgang, die surrealistische Techniken des 
Zerschneidens und assoziierten Neuarrangierens 
adaptierend. Durch die Übertragung der magischen 
Erscheinung des sich bewegenden Bildes in einen 
Schreibvorgang erweitert "Digit" das Konzept 
traditioneller Projektion in ein Konzept einer 
Projektion die zwischen Literatur und Bewegtbild 
agiert. "Digit" ist was William S.Burroughs eine 
"soft machine" nennt. Im Gegensatz zu anderen 
Schreibstilen, bei denen Maschinen interferieren, 
ist hier die menschliche Bewegung frei und kann 
sich in jegliche Richtung ausbreiten. Die 
Performance koppelt den menschlichen Prozess des 
Denkens an das geschriebene Wort.

Parallel to re:place (int. Conference on the 
History of Media, Art, Science and Technology)in 
the House of World Cultures, Julien Maire 
presents his live performance "Digit" and the 
projection "Low resolution Cinema" at GfKFB. His 
work "Exploding Camera" will be shown 
simultaneously in the House of World Cultures.

"Low resolution Cinema" is a 128 x 64 pixels 
projection in a size of 6m x 3,5m. The piece is 
based on a high reduction of the resolution and 
decompresses the cinematographic moving images by 
producing the projection with a special projector 
using two black and white Liquid Crystal Displays 
(LCD). Both are in movement inside of the 
projector. The horizon line, or border, is 
physically cut on each lcd( each LCD has been 
half-destructed in order to display only the 
upper or the lower side of the image).
DIGIT: A writer sits at a table writing by simply 
sliding his finger over a blank piece of paper, 
printed text, printed lines appear under his 
index finger. The spectators can come very close 
to the 'writer' and read the text following the 
movement of the finger. The writer remains 
absorbed in his task. Nothing appears to come 
between the thought and the printed words. 
"Digit" is located between a cinematographic 
process and the process of writing. The "magic" 
of the apparition of a moving image is 
transcribed into a different cinematic setup. 
"Digit" enlarges the concept of projection and 
the concept of a project that operates in 
interstices between literature and moving image 
as well. "Digit" is a kind of "soft machine". In 
opposition to other types of writing where 
machine interferes, the human movement is free 
and can print in any direction. The performance 
interfaces the human process between the thought 
and printed word.

These works are connected to Julien Maire's main 
research to adapt the cinema /video interface in 
order to examine the properties of the reflecting 
subject.
