Der Künstler wird anwesend sein./The artist will be present.


Das Edith-Ruß-Haus für Medienkunst präsentiert die erste deutsche
Einzelausstellung des aus Israel stammenden Künstlers Guy Ben-Ner. Seine
Videoarbeiten seit 1999 zeugen von der großen Themenvielfalt seines
Werks.

Im Mittelpunkt aller Filme steht der Künstler selbst, der sich und
seine Rolle als Autor/Regisseur der Arbeiten und als Mann und
Familienvater in Szene setzt. Seine Kinder werden einbezogen (Berkeley´s
Island, 1999, Moby Dick, 2000, I´d give it to you if I could, but I
borrowed it, 2005-07) und auch seine Frau spielt gelegentlich die Rolle
der Frau und Mutter (Stealing Beauty, 2007).

Fast alle Filme enthalten vielfältige Bezüge zu Filmklassikern und zu
wichtigen literarischen Werken, die von Guy Ben-Ner für seine Zwecke
übernommen und mit Ironie bearbeitet werden. In If only it was as
easy to banish hunger by rubbing the belly as it is to masturbate, 2009,
zitieren oder adaptieren Ben-Ner und sein Filmpartner Vorlagen wie Don
Quijote, Der kleine Prinz, Alice hinter den Spiegeln, In achtzig Tagen
um die Welt, Warten auf Godot und die Göttliche Komödie.

Ben-Ners Filme entwickeln sich um witzige Settings. Für Stealing
Beauty, eine der erfolgreichsten Arbeiten des Künstlers, ließ sich
die gesamte Familie heimlich in verschiedenen Ikea-Märkten häuslich
nieder. Allerdings bleibt Betrachtern (und Ikea-Kunden) das Lachen im
Halse stecken, wenn der Künstler und seine Familie ein Loblied auf einen
egoistischen und überzogenen Materialismus inszenieren, der den Wert
eines Menschen alleine an seinem Besitz festmacht.

Mit Drop the Monkey, zeigt das Edith-Ruß-Haus den neuesten Film, der
gerade erst enstanden ist. Hier begibt sich der Künstler in einen Dialog
mit sich selbst, den er zwischen seinem Ich in Berlin und seinem Ich in
Tel Aviv führt, der tatsächlich im Dialog wechselnd zwischen beiden
Städten gefilmt wurde.

The Edith Russ Site for Media Art presents the first German solo
exhibition of Israeli artist Guy Ben-Ner. Since 1999, his video works
have attested to the great diversity of subject matter in his work.

The focus of all films is the artist himself, who features himself and
his role as author/director of the works and as husband and family
father. His children are involved (Berkeley’s Island, 1999, Moby Dick,
2000, I’d give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it, 2005-07) and
sometimes his wife also plays the role of wife and mother (Stealing
Beauty, 2007).  

Nearly all films contain many references to film classics and
especially to important literary works wich Ben-Ner adapts for his own
purpose and treats with irony. In If only it was as easy to banish
hunger by rubbing the belly as it is to masturbate, 2009, Ben-Ner and
his film partner cite or adapt material, including from Don Quixote, The
Little Prince, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There,
Around the World in Eighty Days, Waiting for Godot and the Divine
Comedy.

Ben-Ner’s films take place in funny settings. For Stealing Beauty the
entire family secretly made itself at home in various Ikea stores. But
viewers (and Ikea customers) gag on their own laughter when the artist
and his family praise the egoistic and excessive materialism that solely
equates the value of a person with their possessions. 

The Edith-Russ-Site also shows Drop the Monkey, the newest film which
was recently completed. The artist enters into a dialog with himself,
which he conducts between his self in Berlin and his self in Tel Aviv,
which was actually filmed with the dialog switching between both
cities.
