The artists Celeur and Eugène both grew up in this atmosphere of junkyard
make-do, survivalist recycling and artistic endeavour. Their powerful
sculptural collages of engine manifolds, TV sets, wheel hubcaps and
discarded lumber have transformed the detritus of a failing economy into
bold, radical and warped sculptures. Their work references their shared
African & Haitian cultural heritage, a dystopian sci-fi view of the future
and the positive transformative act of assemblage.

About the Ghetto BIENNALE:
The Grand Rue Sculptors are a community of artists living in a down town
popular neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In December 2009 the
'Sculptors of Grand Rue' hosted the 1st Ghetto Biennale 2009. Over forty
artists, film-makers, academics, photographers, musicians, architects and
writers came to the Grand Rue area of Port-Au-Prince to make or witness
work, that was shown or happened in the neighbourhood.
The 2nd Ghetto Biennale 2011 will take place from the end of November until
the middle of December 2011. All works are made and exhibited in Haiti.
Artists are invited to pass one to three weeks in Haiti before presenting
their work in the neighbourhood to an audience of local people, Port au
Prince neighbourhood communities, arts collectives and arts organisations.
The 2nd Ghetto Biennale is co-curated by Andre Eugene, Celeur Jean Herard
and Leah Gordon.

About the project "A BOOK ABOUT":
“A Book About” is a participatory, community-based art project which invites
local artists, inhabitants and the kids of the Grand Rue neighborhood in
Port-au-Prince, encouraging participants to express and collect personal
views and every-day life experiences in individually crafted artist’s books.
This generated archive of (non-literate) knowledge will be exhibited in a
custom designed temporary library.
Books or libraries in regions with a low literacy rate, like Haiti, may not
be a part of many inhabitants’ everyday lives, and therefore may be
considered as something only accessible to the elite. The concept of the
artist’s book describes a book intended as a work of art in itself in which
there is no priority of (written) text over images. “A Book About” archives
knowledge in a format, which also functions as a medium of educational
transmission, but does not necessarily require literacy in the traditional
sense. Generating an emancipatory language of images through artistic
articulation is an experimental approach to provide access to
non-institutional education.
The importance of documenting and archiving thoughts, memories and
identities in this area has become extremely evident after the earthquake in
2010, when many lost trace of everything they had and knew, even other
people. The books may become a translation of information, knowledge and
culture.
"A BOOK ABOUT" is a project by Silke Bauer, Irina Novarese and Viola Thiele.
