Casting a Net      {a survey of internet art}

Saturday, December 1 > net art show continues indefinitely at
www.mcleanart.org

Thursday, December 6 Talking Heads Panel of Jurors at 7:30

The McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is pleased to present its first juried
exhibition of net art projects selected by a panel of artists and writers.
Conceived of by MPA's webmaster, Jeffrey Smith, the exhibition surveys art
created specifically for and to be viewed on the internet. The show aims to
present the diversity of approaches that net artists take, from Flash film
narratives to interactive sound-embedded "paintings" to randomly generated
visual and textual ideas. The exhibition will exist in cyberspace
indefinitely. Through December 21, visitors to MPA's Emerson Gallery can
see
the selected websites at two computer stations with DSL connections.

The exhibition of 13 projects by 9 regional, national, and international
artists can be accessed through MPA's website, www.mcleanart.org. Go to
Current Exhibitions and click on Casting a Net to access all of the net art
projects. The artists include:

Agricola de Cologne Cologne, Germany
H-Ray Heine San Francisco, California
Robyn Johnson Ross Washington, DC
Lou Janesko Silver Spring, MD
Brian Judy Gaithersburg, Maryland
Allyson Kapin Washington, DC
Patrick Lichty Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Stanza London, England
Judson Wright New York, New York

The jurors include videographer and new media artist Matt Dibble; art critic
George Howell; new media artist James Huckenpahler; and artist & MPA
webmaster Jeffrey Smith. An online essay by juror George Howell accompanies
the exhibition.

A panel discussion about the jurors' decisions and issues germane to net art
will be held in conjunction with the Opening Reception on Thursday, December
6 at 7:30. The reception runs from 7 - 9 p.m. The event is free, and the
public is welcome. Web-tinis and cyber treats will be served.

MPA received funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to implement
this pilot project; the Martha U. Seeley Fund and The McLean Citizens
Foundation to purchase the computer stations; and in-kind support from
atlantech online for the DSL connection and service.

MPA's Emerson Gallery is located on the second floor of the McLean Community
Center at 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean, Virginia. Gallery hours are Tuesday
- Friday, 10 am - 5 p.m., and Saturday, 1 - 5 p.m. For further information,
please call 703.790.1953 or check out MPA's website at www.mcleanart.org.
