Bathos. Anticlimax. Gueule de bois. At the 76th minute of the match, at
22:38, with a quarter of an hour's playing time to go, France leading 4-1, a
bunch of Algerian so-called supporters invaded the playing ground and
succeeded in interrupting the game. A group of kids wanting to make the
big-small-screen. Both teams were totally despondent and saddened, like most
of the crowd, after the decades it's taken to put this match together (in
1958, when the Algerian war officially broke out, a group of brilliant
then-French players of Algerian origin went back to their homeland to form
an independent national so at that time clandestine team; last night's match
was the first and long awaited possibility for reconciliation since). The
French security authorities had removed the chimp cage wiring that prevents
spectators from streaming onto the field. They'll probably have to put it
back. No real heat in the suburbs apparently. No feedback yet from Algeria
either.
Guess I'll just have to stick to rugby.
