present an exhibition titled

SCENIC EYE

Curated by Wolfgang Storch

12 September to 6 October 2001

Opening Wednesday 12 September at the CCA at 19:00 and at the L-ART Gallery
at 20:00

For the third year in a row, the Center for Contemporary Art is commencing
the autumn season with an exhibition of German art, presented in
co-operation with the Goethe-Institut, Kyiv. This year's season will open
with an exhibition titled "Scenic Eye: Visual Art and Theater", with the
participation of Klaus vom Bruch, Carlfriedrich Claus, Hartwig Ebersbach,
Jochen Gerz, Rainer Gorss, Magdalena Jetelova, Hans Peter Kuhn, Raimund
Kummer, Mark Lammert, Olaf Metzel, Hermann Pitz, Karlheinz Schafer, Thomas
Schutte, Katharina Sieverding, Rosemarie Trockel, Gunter Uecker, Wolf
Vostell, Ute Weiss-Leder, Qin Yufen.

The concept for this exhibition emerged from curator Wolfgang Storch's idea
to propose that a group of recognised German artists create works under the
conditions which govern theater art. Such works would have to take into
account the different relationship between such works of art and the
viewers, as well as the existence of playwright, director, and actors. None
of the invited artists had any experience in set design, therefore each of
them implemented primarily their own artistic strategy in their work. Most
artists selected a literary or dramatic theme, creating a work of art which
would re-present the literary work by visual means. Others created works of
art based wholly on formal parameters; here, the interaction between the
work of art, the public, the actor(s), and the text was important, for a
play is always dependent on viewers - who are, in effect, the audience. In
contrast, even a single viewer is sufficient for a visual work, which
requires intimate contact between itself and the beholder. Thus, the
objective was to create a visual work of art while keeping in mind the
theater and taking into account the various rules governing theatrical and
visual art. The aim was to dialogue between visual and theater art.

Starting September 12, the "Scenic Eye" exhibition may be viewed at the CCA
and at the L-ART Gallery (2 Andriivsky Uzviz). A tour of the CCA exhibition
for the press will take place on September 12 at 17:00, to be followed by a
press conference at 17:30 and the official opening at 19:00. Lectures will
be given in the UKMA Congregation Hall by the curator Wolfgang Storch on
September 11 and by Magdalena Etelova on September 13 (at 18:30 on both
dates).

The exhibition is created by the Institute of International Cultural
Relations (ifa) in Stuttgart,
