The workshop offers a first encounter with this software. The
software developers will conduct the workshop themselves and give
opportunity for more profound q&a on theory and realisation.

3. Tapestry - Software

William Ross, Victoria Ward (uk)
Tapestry

Tapestry is a collaborative storytelling system: it weaves a compound
narrative out of the disparate fragments entered by its inhabitants,
splicing and combining narrative steps to build a single navigable
mass of story. Anyone is free to contribute, discuss and one day take
responsibility for part of the weave. The original purpose of the
project was to find an effective way of gathering and presenting
eyewitness testimony. How to gather firsthand material from remote
and how to make that material engaging, informative and useful to
both the researcher and the casual passer-by without relying on
editorial expertise. The system is used by several sites to gather
and discuss evidence of human rights violations, climate change and
other media-unfriendly issues. - The workshop will be followed by a
presentation of the Tapestry-powered website wastun.org with Florian
Schneider, The Yesmen, and others, in the transmediale salon.

Will Ross has a portfolio that stretches from British Telecom's
corporate social responsibility unit to the decidedly anticorporate
mcspotlight.org.

Victoria Ward is with Sparknow, a small and irreverent Knowledge
Management consultancy that mixes corporate, voluntary and public
sector work.

4. Proce55ing

Casey Reas
Interaction Design Institute Ivrea (it)

Proce55ing is an environment for learning the fundamentals of
computer programming within the context of the electronic arts and it
is an electronic sketchbook for developing ideas. Workshop
participants will explore the concept of programming as a means of
creation through writing programs for images, movement, and behavior.
We will be using the Proce55ing environment for writing the software.
Proce55ing is an open project initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas.

Developed at Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Aesthetics and
Computation Group at the MIT Media Lab.

5. Preservation of Video Tapes

Torben Soeborg (dk)
Danish Video Art Data Bank

More and more museums for contemporary art are collecting
installations in which various media are used. These acquisitions are
surrounded by considerable problems. Which aspects play a role in the
conservation and re-installation of multi media installations? What
are the criteria for preservation and re-installation? Is there a
need for more technical know-how to ensure that these installations
can also be presented in the future? How can installations be
registered and documented? Without solutions, a number of these works
will, in the long term, have to be given up as lost.

Video and graphic artist Torben Soeborg of the Danish Video Art Data
Bank examines the problems with preserving the immaterial variable
media and more specific the conservation of works on old video tapes.
He put forward proposals for both "passive" and active" actions and
questions for discussion about what can be done? - and what should be
done?

Workshop: Preservation of Video Tapes
Monday 3 February 2003 / 16.00 - 20.00 Uhr, K1

6. Wireless Networks

Lars Aronsson (se)
Community Wireless Networking

There is a now widespread belief that access to the Internet
increasingly will use wireless technology in homes, offices, schools,
and public spaces. As access to the Internet becomes an increasingly
important part of our daily cultural, economic and social lives,
international initiatives are arising that aim to put these new
communication technologies in the hands of local communities.
Elektrosmog, an online discussion group based in Stockholm, is one of
the most important of these new organizations dedicated to public,
wireless Internet access.

Lars Aronsson will give a lecture and lead a discussion on the
cultural and social implications of these new wireless technologies
as well as provide an overview of current Swedish projects.

Lars Aronsson is computer scientist and programmer. He founded
Elektrosmog in 2000.

7. Ogg/Vorbis and Open Media Standards

Adam Hyde (nz/nl/gb)
Ogg/Vorbis and Open Media Standards

OggVorbis is a new open standard audio compression format designed to
replace existing proprietary, patented formats. Vorbis is different
from existing proprietary formats in that it is completely free, open
and unpatented. Developed as part of the Ogg project, OggVorbis is
part of a larger initiative currently being undertaken to create a
fully open multimedia system. This workshop will introduce the
format, focusing on both technical specifics (compression,
encoding/decoding, listening comparisons between competing formats)
as well as the philosophical and legal issues underpinning open media
standards and initiatives.

Adam Hyde is a new media artist and musician. He has a special
interest in streaming media, in both visual and audio contexts.

8. SPECIAL: sounds tactical - a Next 5 Minutes Tactical Media Lab

at Podewil, 5 - 7 February 2003, daily 12.00-18.00 hrs

The three-day workshop will examine the potentials for using sound
material in art activism and tactical media campaigns. It is
conceived as a Tactical Media Lab in preparation of the Next 5
Minutes 4: Tactical Media conference which is due to take place in
Amsterdam in May 2003. One of the projects to be developed during the

conceived by Laurence Rassel (B) and Cornelia Sollfrank (D) with
other collaborators. The workshop is organised by Podewil in
cooperation with transmediale.03.
