Genius loci, "the spirit of the place," is a rich subject for artists and
cartographers to explore new territory in mapping
discourse. Using mapping as the medium for locating the self and others in
the city, the Genius Loci Symposium brings together artists, cultural
geographers, writers and historians to present and discuss the meaning of
place
in Los Angeles.Presentations- texts, filmic narrative, and investigations of
public space-illustrate the subjective nature of any mapping practice. Given
current shifts of social, economic, cultural, and physical boundaries in Los
Angeles
and around the globe, discussions of how we conceive genius loci are timely.

Organized by Lize Mogel and Chris Kahle, concurrent with the Genius Loci
exhibition, on view at SCI-Arc through March 23rd.
