OPEN TERRITORIES: WORKSPACES
The Open Territories Workspaces are comprised of three projects that=20
occupy fixed areas within the DEAF_ARENA until Sat=2E March 01=2E The=20
projects, described below, have been selected for the manner in which=20
they visualise, utilise or define archival structures and data realms in=20=
ways which engage the public in an active process of data-based=20
investigation and intervention=2E=20
WORKSPACE 1: KINGDOM OF PIRACY - LOG=09=09=09
http://residence=2Eaec=2Eat/kop/
Shu Lea Cheang (UK), Armin Medosch (UK), Yukiko Shikata (JP)
<KOP> is an online workspace exploring the free sharing of digital=20
content - often condemned as piracy - as the net's ultimate art form=2E A=20=
floating kingdom adrift in the codified open source open sea, K=2EO=2EP=2E=
=20
proposes an installation/performance "LOG" as a "piracy" enactment=20
of the governments' data stealing initiatives=2E K=2EO=2EP=2E invites DEAF=
=20
participants to log into V2 's server, through which the visitors IPs wil=
l=20
be tracked, the resulting data being retained and mapped and further=20
'processed ' and 'broadcast'=2E A wireless antenna network 'powers' the=20=
Open Territories into becoming a public access network zone, taking=20
the Arena into the public domain=2E KOP encourages the public to bring=20
their airport/lan supported laptops into the public realm to create the=20=
Kingdom's traceable paths of data =2E=2E=2E which will be reprocessed and=20=
emitted as a series data interventions resonating with random drop out=20
, graphic transformations, patent infringements, distortion and likely=20
'threatening' signals=2E
The Kingdom of Piracy <KOP> was originally created as an online=20
exhibition project in Taiwan=2E 14 art works and 3 writers projects were=20=
commissioned to deal with Intellectual Property issues ranging from=20
bio-piracy, censorship and control of the internet to demos, games=20
and new interfaces for file-sharing=2E
WORKSPACE 2: SUBTRACT THE SKY=09=09=09=09www=2Esubtractthesky=2Eorg=20
presented by: Sharon Daniel (US) and Mark Bartlett (US) with Olga=20
Trusova (US)
SUBTRACT THE SKY provides individuals and groups with an online=20
environment for collective and emergent methods of mapping=2E Mapping=20
is inter-subjective communication - the visualization or representation=20=
of data and information=2E Subtract the Sky invites participants to become=
=20
cartographers, enabled with the tools they need to produce an archive=20
of maps that trace their own histories and re-map their own social and=20
political worlds=2E Participants create this archive by contributing data,=
=20
creating categories and associations, and re-interpreting existing data=20=
using a multi-user image editor and a real-time visualization of=20
Subtract the Sky's evolving database=2E
SUBTRACT THE SKY by Sharon Daniel and Mark Bartlett, with John=20
Jacobs, Olga Trusova, Adam Hiatt and Victor Dods=2E Project=20
development has been supported, in part, by the Daniel Langlois=20
Foundation, the Banff Center for the Arts, the France-Berkeley Fund and=20=
the University of California=2E
=20
WORKSPACE 3: RHIZOME=2EORG=09=09=09=09=09=09www=2Erhizome=2Eorg
presented by Mark Tribe (US), Francis Hwang (US)
This New York based nonprofit organization picks up on the idea of the=20
organic rhizome - a root-like stem that extends multi-directionally=20
underground and connects plants in a living network=2E Rhizome=2Eorg=20
creates networks and occupies media space by ceaselessly=20
establishing "connections between semiotic chains, organization of=20
power, and circumstances relative to the arts, sciences, and social=20
struggles=2E"* Appearing at DEAF as a tentative transatlantic appendage,=20=
Rhizome=2Eorg seeks to establish a European node of activity to extend=20
its programs and support the creation, presentation, discussion and=20
preservation of new media art in Europe=2E As an Open Territories=20
Wokspace Rhizome=2Eorg invites the public to enter their archival=20
territories - ArtBase, TextBase and the not-yet-public Ephemera Archive=20=
- as well as to discuss the emergence of such a European base of=20
operation=2E=20
*leaning on Deleuze and Guattari's figurative use of the Rhizome term=20
as quoted in=20
A Thousand Plateaus: : Capitalism and Schizophrenia, U=2E of Minnesota=20
Press, Minneapolis=2E 1987=2E
Rhizome=2Eorg was founded in 1996 to provide an online platform for the=20=
global new media art community=2E Their programs include email- and=20
web-based discussions and publications, searchable archives for the=20
preservation of new media art and texts, a new media art calendar,=20
opportunity listings, a community directory, new media art=20
commissions, web hosting, online education and outreach events=2E
