Telling stories beyond the methods of conventional cinema or omnipresent
television is a fundamental approach of artistic film. Like music, painting
and poetry, film's materiality, form and its image-time structure has a
greater narrative potential than one is led to believe by the filmed
adaptations of plays or the literature adaptations for conventional cinema.

Over the course of a century we have learned to read a filmic alphabet and
syntax that was unknown or unrecognized before the time of film. The
audience is able to read film according to how the images are sequenced in a
(pre)determined period of time, edited, and shot from various perspectives.
