A ZKM | Karlsruhe exhibition as part of the European Cultural Festival 
2004

The exhibition Call me ISTANBUL ist mein Name is witness to the rich 
dialogue now taking place between the new urban agglomeration that is 
Istanbul and the architects, artists, urbanists, designers, and 
researchers who are thinking, working, and playing within that space. 
The exhibition includes photography, design, media art, acoustic 
installations as well as specially conceived projects that reflect and 
deal with the cities variety.

Ways of how Istanbul functions are presented- as a sort of creative 
process, an almost genetic power which finds solutions of its own to 
turn the dysfunctional into something functional. As much as Istanbul 
is a city of ancient icons and ocularcentricity, it is also a city of 
audition. In the exhibition hall, as in the city’s immense urban space, 
discontinuous events proliferate. Material fluctuates. Sounds drain 
substance. Sights, smells, textures, and voices mingle the animal, the 
mechanical and the human. Istanbul can also be seen as a permeable 
time/space membrane, a transparent film between the present city of 
Istanbul and the Europe of the future, as a role model for the European 
multi-cities to come, as a flexible and vibrating system. This 
exhibition offers an encounter with some signals coming from that 
metapolis, a place of places, that never stopped transforming itself.

The exhibition is being generously funded by the Federal Cultural 
Foundation and is one of the main events of the 17th European culture 
days 2004 in Karlsruhe (18.04.-08.05.2004) which are dedicated to 
the topic “Istanbul. It is curated by Roger Conover, Eda Cufer and 
Peter Weibel. Call me ISTANBUL ist mein Namewill be accompanied by a 
wide-ranging programme of supporting events (including film, music and 
literature features) and a two-day symposium at the ZKM - media 
theatre(April 23 – 25, 2004 – conference language: German).
