with artists from the new and candidate European Union member states

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Open call for submissions for E x t e n d e d V i e w s , a video
art project in public space.
Fifteen video works by artists from the new and candidate EU member
states will be projected on the glass facades of various new buildings
in the recently developed ‘Ceramique' district in Maastricht, the
Netherlands, from October 15 through October 31, 2004.

BACKGROUND

E x t e n d e d V i e w s is initiated and organised by the
exhibition department ‘De Stadshal’, part of the Centre Céramique, an
information and cultural centre in Maastricht’s newly developed
district ‘Céramique’. On a yearly basis, almost half a million people
visit the centre. The district also houses the well-known
Bonnefantenmuseum and is located next to the MECC congress-centre,
which will host several meetings, conferences and debates within the
framework of this years’ Dutch presidency of the European Union.

EXHIBITION

E x t e n d e d V i e w s will show a total of 15 video works as
large-scale projections on the glass facades of various buildings in
Maastricht’s Céramique-district, using the windows of offices,
apartment buildings and shops as single-channel or multi-channel
projection screens. The district attracts many visitors throughout the
day: office-workers, residents, architectural tourists and shopping
people crowd the streets until the end of the afternoon, and are joined
in the evening by the restaurant and bar crowd.
In the second half of October, every day from 16.00 hrs. until after
midnight, E x t e n d e d V i e w s will provide an insight into
the artistic practices of contemporary artists from the countries that
recently joined the expanding European Union, as well as from the
countries that are in the process of joining.

SELECTION CRITERIA

For E x t e n d e d V i e w s we are looking for works from artists
from the new and candidate member states of the European Union. Artists
from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia,
Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey are
eligible to submit their video works, as well as artists who originate
from these countries but are now residing elsewhere.
Although there are no specific themes formulated, the selection of the
works will undoubtedly be influenced by the reflection on the social
and cultural meaning of the expanding European Union. Our first aim
however will be the presentation of outstanding contemporary artistic
positions in video art, suitable for projection in public space. Sound
is provided for all projections. Works must be produced after 2000.
The artists of the selected fifteen selected works will be paid a
honorarium of € 300.- per work.
