Subject: <nettime> Slovenian - Bosnian Cultural Exchange

The most controversial former Yugoslav alternative music project, and
the only one that ever made success globally, Slovenian band Laibach
moved to Bosnia.

Laibach (German name for Ljubljana) phenomenon is very important for
understanding of the developments in SFRY in late eighties, that
ultimately lead to the demise of former Yugoslavia. Their strength
was in the weakness of that state.

Recently, Laibach sued Slovenia (!) for cultural hegemonism.
Actually, Laibach got offended by their annual state budget being cut
from $20,000 to $4,500. They lost the case, and decided to become a
Bosnian band (ironically, Bosnia was the first republic in former
Yugoslavia to ban their performances; they were banned to perform in
SFRY from 1983-1987). Bosnian cultural ministry welcomed Laibach.

In exchange, in Slovenia there is rising popularity of Bosnian folk-
music....
