Zum 18. Mal findet vom 20. April bis 24. April in Osnabrueck eines
der groessten Multimediaereignisse Europas statt: an fuenf Tagen
praesentiert das EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL (EMAF) aktuelle Trends
und neueste Entwicklungen der internationalen Medienkunst.

Als internationales Forum für experimentelle Film- und Videoarbeiten,
Performances, multimediale Installationen, DVD- und Internetprojekte
zeigt das EMAF kreative Newcomer und renommierte Kuenstler.

Mit dem Motto Document beleuchtet das 18. European Media Art
Festival (EMAF) in diesem Jahr unterschiedliche medienkünstlerische
Herangehensweisen an dokumentarische Formen.

// Ausstellung
Die Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche praesentiert
zwoelf Werke internationaler Kuenstler, die sich auf ganz
unterschiedliche Weise dem Motto "Document" naehern: Mal
unterhaltsam wie Julika Rudelius mit "Train", mal hart an der
Realität wie Avi Mograbi in "Detail", dann provozierend wie
Santiago Sierra mit "250 cm line tattooed on six paid people"
oder mit einem selbstironischen Laecheln wie bei Hartmut Jahns
"Schalten Sie den Fernseher ab!".

// Werkschauen
Mit Peter Greenaway begrueßen wir einen der weltweit bedeutendsten und
einflussreichsten Filmemacher, Medienphilosophen und Bildenden
Künstler. Er praesentiert sein neustes Projekt "The Tulse Luper
Suitcases" (TLS), das sich aufgrund seiner Vielgestaltigkeit in allen
Sektionen des EMAF wiederfindet. Eingerahmt von den drei zum Projekt
gehoerenden Kinofilmen stellt Peter Greenaway persoenlich in einem
Live Talk sein multimediales Großprojekt vor.

Auch der Berliner Filmemacher Harun Farocki, dem wir in diesem Jahr
eine Werkschau widmen, ist gleich in zwei Sektionen des Festivals
vertreten. Im Filmprogramm belegt eine Reihe von zwoelf Produktionen,
warum Farocki als einer der bedeutendsten Dokumentarfilmer
Deutschlands gilt. Für die Installation "Auge-Maschine I-III" in der
Ausstellung verknuepft der Berliner Regisseur Bildmaterial aus dem
Golf-Krieg mit Bildern aus der Welt des Konsums und zeigt, wie
militaerische Bildtechnologie für Kontrollsysteme in unserem
Konsumentenalltag zum Einsatz kommt.

// Int. Film - und Videoprogramm
Mit seinem Filmprogramm, das rund 225 Beitraege umfasst, ist das EMAF
das einzige Festival in Deutschland, das die ganze Bandbreite
experimentellen Medienschaffens zeigt. Der klassische Kurzfilmbereich
reicht von alchemistischer Filmbearbeitung bis zu aktuellen Musikclips
aus der Digitalbox. In der langen Form sind neben experimentellen
Altmeistern wie Wilhelm Hein ("You killed the Undergroundfilm or The
Real Meaning of Kunst bleibt bleibt") und Klaus Wyborny ("Lieder der
Erde / Teil 2") auch vielversprechende Neulinge wie der Amerikaner
Jonathan Caouette mit "Tarnation" vertreten.

// Retrospektive
Mit der Retrospektive zu Owen Land bietet das EMAF außerdem die
seltene Gelegenheit, Filme wieder zu entdecken, die jahrzehntelang in
der Versenkung verschwunden waren. Land (frueher bekannt als George
Landow) gilt als einer der originellsten amerikanischen Filmemacher
der 60er und 70er Jahre, dessen fruehen Materialfilme als
"strukturelle Filme" gelten, obgleich er sich mit Witz und Ironie
jeglicher Filmtheorie verweigerte.

// Preise
Traditionell vergibt der Bundesverband der Deutschen Filmjournalisten
den Preis der deutschen Filmkritik für den besten deutschen
Experimentalfilm des Jahres. Darueber hinaus wird in diesem Jahr
erneut der mit * 2.500 dotierte EMAF-Award für eine richtungsweisende
Arbeit der Medienkunst verliehen.

// Kongress
Die theoretische Klammer des Festivals bildet der Kongress, der das
Thema Document vorstellt, ausführliche Informationen zu Festival-
projekten bietet und auf dem Fragen zukuenftiger Entwicklungen
der Medienkunst von Experten diskutiert werden.

// STUDENT FORUM
Das student forum praesentiert eine internationale Auswahl
studentischer Videoarbeiten und 30 Installationen. Kooperationspartner
ist in diesem Jahr die Kunsthochschule Kassel (KHK).

For the 18th time, one of the greatest European multimedia events will
be taking place in Osnabrueck, from 20 to 24 April: over a period of
five days, the EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL (EMAF) will present current
trends and the latest developments in international media art.

As an international forum for experimental films and videos,
performances, multimedia installations, DVD and Internet
projects, the EMAF will introduce both creative newcomers and renowned
artists.

Under this year's motto >Document< the 18th European Media Art
Festival (EMAF) highlights the various different approaches media
artists have towards documentary forms.

// Exhibition
The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche presents twelve
works by international artists, who approach the motto >Document<
from very different angles: sometimes in an entertaining manner,
as in Julika Rudelius' "Train", sometimes very close to reality,
as in Avi Mograbi's "Detail", then in a provocative manner, as in
Santiago Sierra's "250 cm line tattooed on six paid people" or
with a self-ironic smile, as in Hartmut Jahn's "Schalten Sie den
Fernseher ab!" (Switch off the TV).

// Presentation
We will be welcoming Peter Greenaway, one of the world's most eminent
and influential film-makers, media philosophers and fine artists.
Greenaway will present his latest project "The Tulse Luper Suitcases"
(TLS), which is so multiform that it is represented in all sections of
the EMAF. Not only will the three cinema films from the project be
shown - Peter Greenaway will also appear personally to give a live
talk about his large multimedia project.

The Berlin film-maker Harun Farocki, to whom we dedicate an extensive
show this year, is represented in two sections of the festival. In the
film programme a series of twelve productions verifies why Farocki is
regarded as one of the most eminent documentary film-makers in
Germany. For the installation "Auge-Maschine I-III" (Eye-Machine
I-III), which will be exhibited, the director links footage from the
Gulf War to images from the world of consumerism, demonstrating how
military image technology is used for control systems in our everyday
world of consumption.

// Int. Film and Videoprogramme
With its film programme, comprising around 225 contributions, the EMAF
is the only festival in the whole of Germany that spans the whole
range of experimental media creativity. The classic short film section
ranges from alchemic film processing to current music clips from the
digital box. In the long form, many promising newcomers are
represented, such as the American Jonathan Caouette with "Tarnation",
alongside experimental Old Masters such as Wilhelm Hein ("You killed
the Undergroundfilm or The Real Meaning of Kunst bleibt bleibt") and
Klaus Wyborny ("Lieder der Erde / Teil 2").

// Retrospective
In the retrospective on Owen Land EMAF also offers its viewers the
rare opportunity to rediscover films that had vanished from the scene
for decades. Land (formerly known as George Landow) is regarded as one
of the most original American film-makers of the 60s and 70s, whose
early material films are considered to be "structural films", even
though he rejected any kind of film theory with wit and irony.

// Awards
Traditionally, the Federal Association of German Film Journalists
award the German Film Critique Award for the best German experimental
film of the year. Furthermore, the * 2,500 EMAF Award will again be
given this year for a pioneering work in media art.

// Congress
The Congress is the theoretical part of the festival that joins all
the sections together. At the Congress the subject of >Document< will
be introduced, detailed information on festival projects will be
provided, and experts will discuss the issue of the future development
of media art.
