THE FESTIVAL
re:mote is a one-day experimental festival, bringing together new media
art practitioners and theorists from Europe, Japan, Australia and New
Zealand to discuss the theme of remoteness and technology.

re:mote will explore questions like: what does it mean to be remote in an
electronic art world? Are there 'centres' and 'peripheries' within a world
increasingly bridged, criss-crossed and mapped by digital technologies?
Can technologically mediated communication ever substitute for
face-to-face dialogue? Is geographical isolation a factor in contemporary
art production? Is remote a relative concept?

re:mote will feature on-site, online and pre-recorded presentations
analysing the way that digital technologies can augment collaborations
across geographical and cultural distance. Artists and commentators from
London, Newcastle, Helsinki, Rotterdam and Sydney will give presentations
of their work via live video stream to an audience in Auckland. Presenters
from around New Zealand will also attend in person to share their work.

The keynote presentation will be from Japanese artist, radio pioneer, and
lecturer, Tetsuo Kogawa (Professor of Communication at Tokyo Keziai
University), who is travelling to Auckland especially to present at
re:mote, on the topic of technology and the body, and to demonstrate and
perform with micro fm radio transmitters.

New Zealand presenters include Professor Sean Cubitt (Screen and Media
Studies, Waikato University), Caro McCaw (Senoir Teaching Fellow,
University of Otago), Auckland designer Trudy Lane, Honor Harger
(Director, AV Festival Newcastle, UK), Sally Jane Norman (Director,
CultureLab, University of Newcastle, UK), writer Eu Jin Chua, and local
artists Phil Dadson, Helen Varley Jamieson, Ian Clothier, and Paul
Woodruffe.

Additionally many international presenters will join the event live
through online video to present. The guests include Stephen Kovats
(Programs Developer, V2, Rotterdam, Netherlands), Sophea Lerner (Lecturer
Media & Sonic Arts, Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, Finland), James Stevens
(Founder Consume Wireless Network, London, UK), Zina Kaye (Artist,
Sydney), David Metcalfe (Chief Executive, Forma, Newcastle UK), and Sneha
Solanki(new media artist & lecturer at University of Newcastle UK).

There will also be two live performances. The first performance wi ll be
live online by London experimental dub duo 'Tennis', and the second will
be a collaborative performance between New Zealanders eset (Adam Hyde) and
i.e. wlltts (Adam Willetts) and Belgium based musician zy'z x (Farmers
Manual).

Complimentary Tiger beer and a discussion will complete the day.

WORKSHOP
Additionally a workshop by Tetsuo Kogawa will be held on the following day
(sunday 20th) on how to build micro-FM transmitters. Please contact
