Short Biography:

*born 1936 in H”meenlinna. Architect SAFA, Professor of Architecture, 
University of Technology, Helsinki, Finland.

Pallasmaa has been engaged in architectural, product and graphic 
design and town planning since 1963; currently running his 
architectural affice of some thirty employees in Helsinki. Formerly 
State Artist Professor (83-88); Director of the Museum of Finnish 
Architecture (78- 83); Associate Professor at the Haile Selassie I 
University, Addis Abeba (72-74); Director of Exhibition Department at 
the Museum of Finnish Architecture (68-72, 74-83); Rector of the 
College of Crafts and Design(70-72).

Designer of exhibitions of Finnish architecture, planning and visual 
arts shown abroad in more than thirty countries.

Numerous articles and lectures on cultural philosophy, environmental 
psychology and theory of architecture and arts in various countries 
.Editor of several books and over thirty exhibition catalogues. 
Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Member of 
the CICA International Committee of Architectural Critics, Member of 
the International Academy of Architecture.

Short Biography:

*FranÁois Penz is an architect and the founder Director of Cambridge 
University Moving Image Studio (CUMIS). He teaches in the Department 
of Architecture at the University of Cambridge  where he runs the 
Mphil course in 'Architecture and the Moving Image', part of the 
Digital Studios. He co-edited  'Cinema & Architecture' ( BFI ,1997), 
ëArchitectures of Illusioní ( Intellect, 2003) and  ëScreen Citiesí 
in the CITY journal (Vol 7, No 3, 2003). His main research topic is 
the history of the relationship between Cinema and Architecture and 
how this background informs the current debate on the use of digital 
moving images in Architecture. He is a fellow of Darwin College and a 
founder Director of the company ScreenSpace.

HELMUT WEIHSMANN*

Short Biography:

*Helmut Weihsmann born 1950 in Vienna, is an international renowned 
architectural and film historian. He completed his architectural 
studies in Vienna in 1980 and has lectured widely since 1986 in 
universities, colloquiums, summer academies and workshops on 
architecture and film design, including at the Academy of Applied 
Arts in Vienna, at the School of Architecture/Columbia University 
(New York City), Getty Center in Santa Monica, Berlin, Cambridge, 
Copenhagen, Frankfurt and London. Author of several pioneering books 
and countless articles on the subject, i.e. GEBAUTE ILLUSIONEN ú 
Architektur im Film (Vienna 1988), CINŠTECTURE: Film -Architektur - 
Moderne (Vienna 1995), etc. Co-founder of the debut 
Film-Arch-Festival of 1993 in Graz. He has curated special film 
programs for several German and Austrian architectural associations, 
museums and organized exhibitions and media presentations on 
architecture and urbanism, including the Architekturzentrum in 
Vienna, the Lentos Art Museum in Linz and the newly built 
mdm/Rupertinum in Salzburg. He is the director of an annual film 
cycle U&AE (URBANISM AND ARCHITECTURE) and the curator of the 
mediatheque at the architectural study center AUT/Tyrol in Innsbruck

ALEX McDOWELL*

ëPROGRESSIVE FILM DESIGNí

TRADITION AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY



Short Biography:

* Alex McDowell, Production Designer, (The Crow, Fight Club, Fear and 
Loathing in Las Vegas, Minority Report, The Terminal, and Charlie and 
The Chocolate Factory) integrates digital technologies with 
traditional design to create a unique process that allows 
unprecedented control over the look of a film.  His centralized art 
department enables the strands of 2D and 3D concept and set design, 
locations, props, lighting and camera, visual effects and post 
production to be comprehensively linked in support of the directorís 
vision and the visual consistency of the film.

For Steven Spielbergís The Terminal, McDowell created a full size 
airport terminal, the largest architectural interior ever built for 
film, and winner of the Best Production Design in a Contemporary Film 
award from the Art Directors Guild of America.  In contrast, he also 
designed the miniature ëpuppet scaleí sets for the upcoming 
stop-motion animated feature Tim BurtonísThe Corpse Bride.

In 2004, McDowell completed the design for Charlie and the Chocolate 
Factory, in which he re-teamed with Burton to bring to life Roald 
Dahlís classic story about eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka.  He has 
described the production as the most complicated and fascinating of 
his career, involving the design and build of an entire Town and 
Factory with the elaborate construction of the strange and 
psychedelic spaces envisioned by Burton for the Wonka factory - 
ìSpace age meets Russian constructivism meets James Bond through the 
lense of an Italian B movie in the timeless placeless world of 
Charlie Bucketî.

In 2005, he is working with Director Anthony Minghella on ìBreaking 
and Entering,î an original drama written by Minghella and set in 
contemporary Kings Cross, London.

Born in Borneo, raised in England and residing in the United States, 
McDowell is a graduate in Fine Art from Central School in London.  He 
began his career as a leading graphic designer for Londonís Punk 
music scene and segued into music videos.  In a flowing series of 
sideway steps, he relocated to Los Angeles, CA and moved to 
production design for commercials and then film.

McDowell is founder and active member of Matter Art and Science, a 
network of designers, filmmakers, scientists and engineers.

DR. FERIDE CICEKOGLU *

Short Biography:

* Dr. Feride Cicekoglu has a background in architecture and has 
developed a professional interest in literature and cinema due to her 
years as a political prisoner during the military junta of 1980 in 
Turkey. Since then she has written or contributed to a number of 
screenplays, such as Donít let them Shoot the Kite (Tunc Basaran, 
1989 ñ Priz du Public, Cannes) and Journey to Hope (Xavier Koller, 
1991 ñ Academy Award for Best Foreign Film) and has published stories 
which were translated into several languages. At the moment she is at 
Istanbul Bilgi University, Film-TV Department. Her recent 
publications include New York-Istanbul (Homer, Istanbul, 2003), two 
articles on the relation of word and image in Orhan Pamukís novel My 
Name is Red (Journal of Aesthetic Education, 2003) and two chapters 
in an international project contributed by 14 writers from 11 
countries (Global Novel, Athens, 2004).

Jord den Hollander

Konusma Basligi: Presentation of His Documentaries

Jord den Hollander was educated as an architect at the Technical 
University in Delft (The Netherlands). He was educated in script 
writing at the London Filmschool.

He combines designwork with writing and filming.

His architectural work  has a close link to water.Among them are 
bridges, pumphouses and boathouses . The work was widely published in 
national and international books and magazines.Films and 
documentaries of Jord den Hollander won prizes on national and 
international festivals. ìThe Greatest Architect of The Netherlandsî 
, his latest documentary on Dutch architect Maaskant, won the first 
prize at the Film and Architecture festival in Kosice. Jord den 
Hollander worked as urban supervisor for the reconstruction of the 
Western Garden Cities in Amsterdam, is communal advisor for the city 
of Amsterdam about living on the water and is director of the 
Architecture and Filmfestival of Rotterdam.

He teaches at the Archietcture Academy of Amsterdam and the 
Architecture Academies of Arnhem and Enschede.
