“Terrain Vague" event (catalogue presentation, 
botanical tour of the PHOENIX area, panel 
discussion and a film programme dealing with the 
topic of the exhibition) we would like to invite

Readme, the festival
Readme is an international festival for software 
art and cultures. Certainly the most popular 
slogan of software art is “people doing strange 
things with software. Our everyday environments 
are increasingly based on software. By e.g. 
intervening in existing commercial software or by 
designing its own solutions software art directs 
our attention to these programmed structures that 
normally remain invisible. Readme was initiated 
in Moscow, Russia, in 2002. In the following 
years Readme has travelled to Helsinki (FI) and 
Aarhus (DK). The Readme activity has brought to 
life Runme.org - a unique online software art 
repository. The fourth edition of the festival, 
entitled “Readme 100 - Temporary Software Art 
Factory", focuses on the notion of production. 10 
artistic/theoretical concepts dealing with the 
topics of spam, open source, hacking, 
outsourcing, search engines and coding, have been 
selected from the roughly 100 submissions. The 
commissioned works from Australia, Argentina, 
France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, 
Spain and Switzerland will be premiered during 
Readme100 in Dortmund, Germany.

Nach einem sehr erfolgreichen Wochenende unter 
dem Motto "Unbestimmtes Gelaende" (mit 
Katalogpraesentation, pflanzenkundlicher Fuehrung 
ueber das PHOENIX Gelaende, einer 
Podiumsdiskussion und einem Filmprogramm zum 
Thema der Ausstellung) moechten wir Sie / Euch

Readme, das Festival
Readme ist ein internationales Festival fuer 
Softwarekunst und -kultur. Die wohl populaerste 
Definition von Softwarekunst lautet “people doing 
strange things with software". Unsere 
alltaegliche Umgebung basiert zunehmend auf 
Software. Softwarekunst macht in kreativer Weise 
auf diese unsichtbaren programmierten Strukturen 
aufmerksam, indem sie z.B. in Programmiercodes 
existierender kommerzieller Software eingreift 
oder eigene Software entwirft. Readme wurde 2002 
in Moskau (RU) initiiert. Waehrend des ersten 
Festivals wurde das Online-Archiv fuer 
Softwarekunst runme.org gegruendet. In den 
folgenden Jahren fand Readme in Helsinki (FI) und 
Aarhus (DK) statt. Die vierte Ausgabe des 
Festivals, “Readme 100 - Temporary Software Art 
Factory", konzentriert sich auf den Begriff der 
Produktion. Aus den ca. 100 fuer Readme100 
eingereichten kuenstlerischen und theoretischen 
Konzepten wurden zehn ausgewaehlt, die sich mit 
den Themen Spam, Open Source, Hacking, 
Outsourcing, Suchmaschinen und 
Coding/Programmieren auseinandersetzen. Die neu 
produzierten Arbeiten aus Australien, 
Argentinien, Deutschland, Frankreich, 
Grossbritannien, Italien, Russland, der Schweiz 
und Spanien erhalten im Rahmen von Readme100 ihre 
Weltpremiere in Dortmund.
