PRESS RELEASE

Sounds Unusual - Northern Territory Festival of New Music

Alice Springs: 8-18 September, 2007 Darwin: 25-28 September, 2007
[Fieldtrips: Central Australia 10-14 September, 2007
Alice to Darwin 19-24 September, 2007]

During September, artists from the Northern Territory, Sydney,
Melbourne and Switzerland will come
together for SOUNDS UNUSUAL - Australia's newest and most ambitious
festival for new and improvised
music, set against the stunning backdrop of the Northern Territory.

Over 20 days and spanning more than 2000 kilometres, SOUNDS UNUSUAL
will present five events at
each end of the Northern Territory, including concerts, workshops,
films and installations. Festival artists
will also take part in two fieldtrips - one in Alice Springs and
Central Australia, the second travelling
halfway across the continent from Alice to events in Darwin via the
Tanami Highway.

The fieldtrips will be a time for artists to engage with the unique
landscapes of the arid centre through to
the tropical north - an opportunity for a diverse group of artists to
work together and collect audio/visual
material for the final event in Darwin: a sound and visual
installation made in the four days from arrival to
open on 28 September. Importantly, this journey will physically
connect the two Artist Run Initiatives of
the Northern Territory - Watch this Space (Alice Springs) and Darwin
Visual Arts Association.

First held in 2006 in Darwin, Sounds Unusual combined over 40 local
artists plus ten invited artists from
Central Australia, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Japan to present
twelve events over nine days. Ranging
from improvised music, live soundtrack, electronic, contemporary
classical, sound art and field recordings
- Sounds Unusual continues in 2007 to present cutting edge
collaborations from international and national
talent with local innovators. Creating a true alternative to
mainstream arts events and allowing NT
audiences to experience first hand developments and performances from
interstate and abroad.
The artists for 2007 are a mixture of emerging and established
artists, including:

Jason Kahn Switzerland performer
Robin Fox Melbourne performer
Sumugan Sivanesan Sydney performer, workshops and installation
Anthony Magen Melbourne performer and workshops
Kris Keogh (Blastcorp) Darwin performer
J9 Stanton Alice Springs performer
Katie Hepworth Sydney co-producer, installation and photography
Robert Curgenven Alice Springs director, performer and installation
Tanja Kimme Melbourne photography, documentation and video

Come for a special preview night in Alice Springs at Watch this Space
on Friday 31 August in the gallery
for performances and films.

Sounds Unusual is an independent artist-run organisation. The Alice
Springs events are included in the
Alice Desert Festival and the Festival is proudly supported by Watch
this Space, Darwin Visual Arts
Association and Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory.
