Ever since ink turned into toner and pixel, printed paper has been
struggling to survive as a medium. Yet, stubborn independent editors
are still producing the most endangered species of paper products: the
independent magazine. By endlessly reinventing content, technical and
economical strategies these magazines are testimony to the distinct
qualities of printed publications, such as periodicity, the touch of
paper and the smell of copy. Yet , it is precisely the love for the
speed of electrons, and an understanding of the potentials of networked
media, that have inspired the cultural tactics of these magazines; from
print-on-demand, collaborative editing, to sharing content and
knowledge. Here collaboration is better than competition.
De Balie presents an evening about the survival strategies of critical
independent magazines focusing on digital culture, but with a love for
- and insistence on - print.
With the participation of Alessandro Ludovico (editor-in-chief Neural
and co-founder of the Mag.Net -Electronic Cultural Publishers), Simon
Worthington (co-founder Mute Magazine, co-founder Mag.Net), , Georg
Schoellhammer (director Documenta 12 Magazines and editor-in-chief and
co-founder of Springerin, co-founder Mag.Net), Arie Altena (media
theorist, writer, lecturer and researcher at Jan van Eyck Academy).
Moderation: Nat Muller (De Balie)
