ALEXANDER NIKOLIć | STATEMENT

1991 scheiterte eine Weltausstellung in Wien an einer
Bürgerbefragung. Wir fragen erst gar nicht. Wir wüssten auch nicht
wen wir fragen sollten. Wussten Sie, dass die ältesten Pyramiden der
Welt in Bosnien stehen? Würden die Mumien wiedererwachen und aus den
bosnischen Pyramiden herauskommen, was würden sie sich denken? Laut
einem Witz, der am Balkan die Runde macht, “Hier, hat sich noch
immer nichts verändert” oder in einer Variation: “Wer hat die
Zeit zurückgedreht?”


Geplant war diese letzte, gescheiterte EXPO 1995 als wegweisende,
erste Weltausstellung, welche von zwei Ländern gemeinsam geplant und
durchgeführt werden sollte. Die erste in Wien geplante und
durchgeführte Weltausstellung fand 1873 statt, das damalige Büro der
Weltausstellung beheimatet heute die LABfactory.  Eine Parallele zu
1995 war, dass zu dieser Zeit die Balkanländer sich vom Osmanischen
Joch befreiten und sich zum Ersten Mal als eigenständige Staaten
präsentieren konnten - die geplante Weltausstellung 1995 sollte eine
ähnliche Perspektive eröffnen. Die Macher verständigten sich als
Motto auf “Brücken in die Zukunft” als bedeutungsschwangere
Metapher mit dem ökonomischen Plan einer wirtschaftlichen
Unterwerfung des ehemaligen Osten und der gleichzeitigen Kaschierung
dieses Planes mit der produktiven Utopie einer Demokratisierung jener
Länder, welche sich vom Joch des real existierenden Sozialismus
befreit hatten.


Für viele steht  die Zeit still, aber wir werden über die Brücken
in die Zukuft marschieren, und die in der Welt-Aus-Stellung zu
sehenden Arbeiten sind unsere Wegweiser. Wohin die Reise führt, kann
jeder selbst entscheiden.

KÜNSTLERInnen | Guide
Sister0. Performancekünstlerin. In my first burial gilt ihr Interesse
den Körpern des Wissens: den desorientierten, verbotenen, verbannten.
Ihrer Überführung, ihrem Transfer und ihrer Sicherung, ihrer
Konservierung. Das Aktionsfeld spannt sich dabei von experimentellen
Medien über bildende Kunst, zu Meme-Hacking, metaphysischen
Netzwerken und den sich daraus erzeugenden Erlebniswelten. Jesse
Darlin' queert Plattformen und Disziplinen: Performance, Musik,
Literatur, Collagen, Illustration, „experimentelles Leben“, sie
geht ins und wird selbst zum Spektakel um es schließlich zu
transzendieren. In der Performance Lecture I was a teenage Pornstar
ver/körpert sie nicht nur, sie zeigt auf: Sie ist gegen die Sex-
Industrie - sie ist aus den gleichen Gründen dagegen, aus denen sie
auch gegen McDonalds ist oder ähnliche Konzerne. Mit verschärftem
Blick wird expliziert: Da, wo der hegemoniale Blick des Großkapitals
uns ausmacht, sind wir nicht.  XLTerrestrials - Dr. Pod p Podinski
beleuchten  die Reversibilität einer phallozentristischen Raketenindustrie
- sie nutzen diese Gelegenheit und dieses Kunstportal, nach Innen und
einander ins Gesicht zu blicken, aufzuzeigen, dass diese Route der
Technologien vor allem eines darstellt: Eine dubiose und duale
Eskapade mit sehr geringen humanitären Resultaten.

Johannes Grenzfurthner liefert anhand verschiedener historischer und
gegenwärtiger Beispiele (speziell auch aus dem Bereich der Hardware/
Software-Industrie) einen theoretischen und praktischen - und
keineswegs ununterhaltsamen - Überblick über das Genre der corporate
anthem. Die Entwicklung vom Frühkapitalismus zum Spätkapitalismus
ist nirgendwo so gut greifbar wie im dominanten Organisationstyp
spätkapitalistischen Wirtschaftstreibens: dem modernen Unternehmen.
Innere Widersprüche und Interessenskonflikte treten zurück hinter
das Fortbestehen als "Gemeinschaft". Die Rückbesinnung auf die
kulturhistorisch ältere Idee der Gemeinschaft führt auch zur
Reaktualisierung bestimmter Ritualformen, etwa im Bereich "Musik".
Die Firmenhymne erscheint auf der Firmenbühne.

In seinem Buch “Imaginary Futures” beschreibt der britische
Politologe Richard Barbrook, wie Ideologen in Ost und West den Traum
von der vernetzten Gesellschaft als Waffe im Kalten Krieg zu nutzen
wussten. Barbrook verfolgt die zentralen Visionen der aktuellen
Internetgeneration zurück bis in die 1960er, wo er am Beispiel der
Weltausstellung in New York zeigt, dass die Argumentation, die ihnen
zugrunde liegt, ihren Ursprung in der US-amerikanischen Propaganda
gegen die damalige Sowjetunion hat. Wäre diese Vergangenheit eine
andere gewesen, dann wäre unsere technologische und politische
Gegenwart ebenfalls eine andere, so Barbrook. Stefan Lutschinger
hingegen ist proletarischer Bohemien und Toter auf Urlaub. Er
arbeitet als Künstler, Kurator, Performer, Blogger und freier Autor
zu gesellschaftlichen Problemstellungen oder sozialen
Konfliktsituationen, deren Lösung ausschließlich mit ästhetischen
Mitteln denkbar sind.

Jaesper Alvar beschäftigt sich mit zentralen Elementen der
Industrialisierung, die bis heute unsere Lebensbedingungen
definieren: Illusionen einer tiefergehenden Sicht, präsentiert durch
eine Reihe von Mediascapes zur Stütze des internationalen Handels.

Société Réaliste zeigen einen Auszug aus dem laufenden Projekt
Ministère de l'Architecture. Diese Produktionseinheit widmet sich
diversen Aspekten der Raumpolitik. Es ist das zweite Kapitel eines
Forschungsprojekts zu territorialen Membranen. Dieses befasst sich im
Speziellen mit der Möglichkeit die autonomen Bereiche Europas
ergonomischer als bisher zu partitionieren.

cuntstunt ist feministischer „Handapparat“, subjektive An/Sammlung
von Texten, Bildern oder Collagen. Verhandelt werden Themen aus
Feminismus, Anarchismus, Positionen zu Sexualität,
Identitätspolitik, Arbeit, Queer Theory und Musik. Nicht nur um
Ergebnisse oder Folgerungen und Konsequenzen ihrer projektbezogenen
Forschungen auszutauschen, sondern auch, um all die anderen
interessanten Dinge, die, die  sich so dazwischen finden,
untereinander und an (möglichst viele) andere zu verteilen. Das
„Best-of“ des gesichteten Materials.

Zampa di Leone arbeiten mit Parametern des künstlerischen Aktivismus
der Balkan Regionen. Ihre Aktionen finden sich als historisierte
immer zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Ihr Zine „In The Arse of
the Balkans“ war brutale Konterkarikatur gewisser generöser,
kuratorischer und ästhetischer Tendenzen der gegenwärtigen
Kunstpraxis: ihrer Balkanisierung. Und erwies sich als effizient -
das Experiment einer ästhetischen Re-formulierung der Balkanregionen
hat seine Anti-Geschichte hervorgerufen

Pod P Podinski ist media activist, art organismus, dj, und Co-Gründer der
XL Terrestrials, ein praxis kollectiv für psychomedia analyse und
virtuellen Exorcisms der Military Entertainment Complex. XLT Projecten in
activ Zusammenarbeit mit Media Decompression Berlin und Asaf Zulah von
Borderline Digital.

Lukas Pusch vereint zwei Welten in einem Bild. Realitäten, die sonst
durch Grenzzäune und Sperranlagen getrennt sind. Ira Hadzic verweist
in „Visoko - Flying High “ auf die euphorischen Zukunftspläne der
Region Europas, wo die Auswirkungen der Globalisierung erst beginnen
sich abzuzeichnen. Sie zeigt die neu entdeckten Pyramiden Bosnien-
Herzegovina’s - diese fungieren als Hoffnungsträger,
Inspirationsquelle und nicht zuletzt als maßgeblicher Katalysator
der Ökonomie.

Stefan Rusu analysiert in 3 Videos u. a. auf welche Weise im Zuge der
Sowjet-Ära nationale Ikonen für die Konstruktion einer moldawischen
Identität genutzt und eingesetzt wurden. Der Konstruktion von Mythen
und Legenden folgt die Besetzung von Märchen. Die Bedeutungen von Gut
und Böse werden umgekehrt. Fakten ersetzt durch Fiktion. Er erforscht
des weiteren Geschichte und Gegenwart Moldawiens, seiner „Heimat“
und die tiefgehenden kulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Moldawien und
der Mongolei. Eine andere Arbeit zeigt wiederum Moldawien zu Sowjet-
Zeiten und in Folge eine frappante Situation: Die Interpretation
der  „moldawischen Identität“ als „Marke“ - eine künstliche
Kreation der sowjetischen Gesellschaftsingenieure die beidem
widerspricht: sowohl der Wissenschaft als auch der Realität. Rudi
Hübl produziert fluxus-artige Würste aus Plakaten kultureller
Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Interesses: Mozart, Klimt,
Schiele, Falco
 Methoden und Techniken seiner urbanen VolXKunst
Arbeiten differieren, nicht aber Themen und Material: Poster und
Plakate.

Mario Grubisic zeigt Experimente zur Zukunft Utopias, erzeugt aus
normalen und a-normalen Situationen der Vergangenheit.  Kazimir
Malevič, konfrontiert uns mit einer Frage: “Ich weiß, dass dies
[...] für euch eine große Überraschung ist, weil allgemein
angenommen wird, dass ich 1935 gestorben sei. [
] Viele meinen, ich
wäre tot. Aber stimmt das?“

Tanya Ury arbeitet mit zeitgenössischen Trends, die nach wie vor
einer standardisierten - oder  - standarisierenden Uniformität
gehorchen – sie folgt der Idee, dass ein Anzug nicht nur
Schutzschicht, sondern auch eine Art der Verkleidung ist. Christoph
Theiler arbeitet disziplinübergreifend in den Bereichen Medienkunst
und elektronischer Musik, Tonbandkompositionen und multimedialen
Klanginstallationen die (alles) in Bewegung setzen.

Die Intention von Shazalakazoo’s - Balkan Breakz  ist einfach: nicht
gedacht als Kunst, ist es einfach Unterhaltung, Spaß, ähnlich der
Musik der Vorfahren –  ihrer Vergangenheit von Gewicht – welche
die Bevölkerung der Balkanregion zuversichtlich durch seine
turbulente Geschichte begleitete. Das Äußere der Musik hat sich
verändert, sie umfasst nun die kontinuierliche Entwicklung der
Instrumente, die harmonischen und rhythmischen Einflüsse der
Gegenwart. Die Essenz aber blieb die gleiche: weniger reden, mehr
tanzen, morgen ist ein neuer Tag.

ALEXANDER NIKOLIć | STATEMENT

The proposed WORLD- EXPO in 1991 for Vienna did not succeed due to a
poll result asking the citizens of the city for consent. We don't
ask. Not at all. We even wouldn't, not that we would know whom to
ask. Yet, did you know the eldest pyramids in the world to be built
in Bosnia-Herzegovina? If the mummies would suddenly awake and
appear, what would they think? In Balkan regions you will hear a
running joke frequently: "Here, still nothing has changed" or a
variation: "Who turned back the time?"

The buzz of World-Exposition was conceived in 1995 and considered to
be conduit breaking. An epoch making first one to be planned,
arranged and carried out of two Countries. First World-Exposition in
Vienna took place in 1873 - its former office, today is premise of
LABfactory.

A parallel to 1995 was that to 1873, the Balkan Peninsula countries
freed themselves of Ottoman Empire. They fought for and presented
themselves as newly independent states - the planned World Fair 1995
should open a similar perspective. Man in charge agreed to theme
their master plan "bridges into the future" - a metaphoric overkill
concealing a profitable concept: to subordinate former eastern
regions economically through a Utopia of "democratisation" for those
who found their self finally at liberty from Real Socialism.

Today, time stands still - still for too many. Opposing this we will
cross those bridges to future – marching. "world-ex-position"
exhibit will guide us where to go, and how to proceed from here,
everyone is free to decide on their behalf.

ARTISTS | Guide

Sister0 is performer working with experimental media concerned with
disorientated, ostracized, banished or imperilled bodies of knowledge
and interested in the transmission and retrieving of them. Jesse
Darlin’ works across the platforms of performance, live music,
literature, collage, illustration and “experimental living,”
moving into and becoming the spectacle in order to transcend it. In
her performance lecture, I was a teenage porn star, she will go
through why she’s against the sex industry but pro-porn; take the
gaze back from the hands of Große Kapital. XLTerrestrials - Popd Yvol
employs strategy for reversing engineering phallic-centric rocket-
style science and industry. By using art-portal, they wish look
inward and face-to-face to illuminate the dubious dual enterprise
that is taking place.

Johannes Grenzfurthner - monochrom uses different historical and
current examples (especially from the area of the hardware/software-
industry). Johannes Grenzfurthner gives a theoretical and applied
overview on the musical genre of corporate anthems by taking the
issues, such as the advancement of pre-capitalism to post-capitalism
(ie. the form of organisation for all social relations in a
particular economical ideology), the most dominant type of
organisation of the post-capitalist endeavour. Yet this is where
contradictions within, and indeed clashes of interest take a step
back behind the curtain of the “community”. The return to old
ideas of community also brings with it certain forms of rituals, like
the usage of a corporate anthem.

Dr. Richard Barbrook traces the early days of the Internet,
beginning  from a pivotal point at the 1964 World’s Fair, in what
critics are  saying is the most well-researched and original account
of  cyber-technology among contemporary works. Crucially, he argues
that had the past been different, our technological and political
present would not be what it is today. Stefan Lutschinger is a
proletarian bohemian and a departed on holiday. He works in the
fields of digital art, recreational robotics, mass agitation art and
anthropology of the post-human.

Jaesper Alvar focuses on our living conditions.  Société Réaliste
proposed to show an extract from its ongoing project Ministère de
l'Architecture. The production takes the form of an administration
devoted to work on various aspects of the politics of the space. In
Vienna, Société Réaliste shows the second chapter of a Ministère
de l'Architecture's research project about territorial membranes.
This partition specifically concerns the possibility of reshaping
European autonomous territories in a more ergonomic way than now.

cuntstunt is a zine, which we like to understand as a feminist
"Handapparat", a subjective compilation of texts, drawings and
collages, coming from the fields of feminism, anarchism, sexuality,
queer theory and music, somewhere in between. Its something like a
"best of" of collected material.

Pod p Podinski is a media activist, art organism, dj, and co-founder of
the XL Terrestrials, a praxis group for psychomedia analysis and virtual
exorcisms of the Military Entertainment Complex. With a background in
communications, film, and theater sound design, he has worked primarily on
the indy frontiers in San Francisco and Berlin, contributing audio, texts,
film work, and tactical media applications to both art + realworld events
like Next 5 Minutes, No Border Camps, Ars Electronica, WTO, G8, and a
variety of local culture reclamations. Many of the XLT visual+conceptual
collaborations are with Media Decompression Berlin and multimedia maverick
Asaf Zulah of Borderline Digital.

Zampa di Leone works within the parameters of cultural activism in
the Balkan region. Their first fanzine, “In the Arse of the
Balkans”, which parodies an entire movement of balkanization of art
practices. Their experiment of aesthetic reformulation of the Balkans
created its anti-history of sorts. Whereas Lukas Pusch brings
together realities which are usually separated by border fences and
restricted areas. Ira Hadzic brings euphoric plans for the future in
a region of Europe where globalisation is only just starting to take
effect into fore. Ira introduces the newly discovered pyramids that
fulfil multiple functions: they act as a beacon of hope, a source of
inspiration and not least of all as an important economic catalyst.

Stefan Rusu explores how images were used in the construction of the
Moldavian identity during soviet era. The construction of myths and
legends ends with the appropriation of fairy-tales that overturn the
meanings of good and evil and by replacing the real facts with
fiction. Then moves to the history and the present of the Moldavia,
his home country, and the deep-going cultural connections between it
and Mongolia, then we land in Soviet Moldova with a striking story
about the creation of an identity as a “brand” which is an
artificial. Rudi Hübl produces fluxus-like sausages made of posters
from Austrian culture-personalities: Mozart, Klimt, Schiele, Falco

He works with different techniques and methods, but always posters
are subject and material of his urban folxart.

Mario Grubisic creates experiments for the future of utopia derived
from the normal and an-normal situation from the past experience. And
when we come to a special contribution, Kazimir Malevič, confronts us
with a question: “[
] I know, this letter is sort of a surprise
for most of you, for the general assumption is, I deceased in 1935.
Many of you supposed I’m dead and gone. But: is this really true?”

Tanya Ury engages with contemporary trends that still conform to an
average uniformity with the idea that a costume doesn't just provide
a protective layer but can also be a form of disguise.  Christoph
Theiler works in cross disciplinary approach that covers media art
and electronic music, leads to tape compositions and multimedia sound
installations where everything was in motion.

The intention of the Shazalakazoo - Balkan Breakz is simple: it is
not meant to be art; it is simple entertainment like the music of its
countless predecessors - an important pastime, faithfully
accompanying the inhabitants of the Balkan Peninsula throughout its
turbulent history, in good or bad times alike. This music only kept
changing its outer shell, embracing the ongoing evolution of popular
instruments, harmonic and rhythmical influences of any current era.
