As the global financial system destabilises and the technological
revolution challenges the basic economic structure in Western society,
the culture sector has continued to make innovative responses to these
changes. 'User generated' and 'peer to peer' content are now a
fundamental part of media and creative practice, lauded and criticised
by commentators including Charles Leadbetter and Andrew Keen.
Distributed South has invited Adam Arvidsson to talk about the crisis of
value created by social innovation, peer production and the new
cooperative or 'ethical' economy. Developed through the spread of
networked ICTs, Arvidsson argues, this economy accounts for an increase
in production of immaterial wealth, where value is created through a
potential transition to new modes of production.
Adam Arvidsson is Associate Professor of Media Studies at the University
of Copenhagen. He has researched the history and sociology of
advertising and consumer culture, and on the brand as a key institution
in the information economy. His present research interests are: cities
and creative industries; the political economy of information and the
relation between economics and ethics.
Distributed South is an initiative working to develop audiences and
dialogue within the media arts sector. Through residencies and
partnership working across the South of England, the initiative aims to
move and inform policy within Media Arts and to drive forward new models
of practice and approach to the field. Distributed South is delivered by
SCAN and SPACE Media.
