Dear Colleagues and Friends

We would like to update you on some work that is taking place in UK,
entitled Distributed South, currently aimed at raising awareness of media
arts, its changing practice, and to look at approaches of widening
participation and audiences.

To this end we have completed 4 residencies to date, there is one exhibition
in progress and we are holding a number of talks and networking meetings.

The networking meetings and talks are aimed at developing strategies for
working in media arts sector globally but also specifically in the South of
UK and all are welcome. Please do get in touch if you would like to join the
network. The next meeting will take place at South Hill Park Arts Centre on
7th March, 1 - 5pm which will also provide an opportunity to view Simon
Hollington and Kyp Kyprianou's exhibition Goodbye Vile Earth!

Stanza

Exploring time based interactions within the gallery setting and utilising
technologies used for urban monitoring and surveillance, Stanza questions
whether meaningful cultural interactions can take place by changing the way
we focus on space. These digital paintings shift through abstract and iconic
patterns, the audience are invited to explore these virtual environments-
and consider what art is in the process.

Stanza specialises in net art, networked spaces, installations and
performances. His work explores artistic and technical opportunities to
enable new aesthetic perspectives, experiences and perceptions within the
context of architecture, data spaces and online environments. He has won
international praise and awards for his new media works that invite
collaboration.

This work is shown alongside the exhibition S-OS: Social Operating System.
The residency is developed in partnership with i-DAT and Plymouth Arts
Centre who also organised the S-OS exhibition.

Goodbye Vile Earth!

>From a residency at FAST (Farnborough Air Sciences Trust) Museum on the site
of the Royal Aircraft Establishment research centre in Farnborough.

2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the first manned powered flight in
Britain over Farnborough Common. The Common became home to the now defunct
Royal Aircraft Establishment, a top-secret military complex and what was one
of the most important aeronautical research centres in the world. Goodbye
Vile Earth! is a misquote of the Italian Futurist Filippo Marinetti, whose
love of flight led him to see a future where humanity abandons terra forma
for a life permanently in the skies.

The installation entitled Goodbye Vile Earth! draws on objects from the
collection at FAST to represent aeronautical history during the Twentieth
Century alongside key developments in art of the modernist period.
Incorporated with videos of archive footage and interviews with former
employees of the Royal Aircraft Establishment the installation presents an
overview of 'progress' from diverse perspectives.

Distributed South Networking Meeting

Looking at evaluation of the projects taking place in Distributed South:
Birgitte Aga (collaborator at i-DAT and co-producer of the online tool
co-here) with Distributed South artists Simon Hollington and Kyp Kyprianou,
Jeannie Driver and Rachel Beth Egenhoefer will look at changing artist
practice and the role that the work produced plays around developing
audiences for media artists.

Rachel Beth Egenhoefer considers her Commodore 64 Computer and Fischer Price
Loom to be defining objects of her childhood. She creates tactile
representations of cyclical data structures in candy and knitting and is
currently researching the intersection of textiles, technology, and the body
in contemporary media studies.

Currently working in the studio in Brighton and then London, Rachel Beth is
tracking the motion of knitting needles in both physical and virtual space,
playing with the Wii, and investigating representations of motion in
body/machine interaction. Additional works explore the space between body
and machine as a place for architectural design.

San Francisco based Egenhoefer is working on the residency consists of
several key parts ­ experimental studio time to create new work, presenting
workshops and lectures, and a commissioned exhibition at Lighthouse
Brighton.
