The MUTEK Autumn season kicked off this year with
the 5th edition of the MUTEK.MX festival in
Mexico City. The MUTEK team along with invited
Canadian artists traveled to Mexico to enjoy
performances in several interesting venues around
the city (you can read more about it later in the
newsletter).
Now back in Montreal, we are fully involved in
preparing for our 10th anniversary edition of
MUTEK taking place from May 27th to 31st in 2009.
Our team is working hard on this special edition.
Two new people have been added to our
organization, bringing their passion and
experience to MUTEK.

THE MUTEK TEAM WELCOMES TWO NEW MEMBERS
We have always given the utmost importance to
assembling a solid and motivated team. This year,
we are happy to welcome two new members. It is
our pleasure to present..
TEODORA NICOLICIN
Teo is our new Director's Assistant and is also
working on MUTEK's Communications. Living in
Québec for a year and a half now, she has
acquired a solid work experience in Romania, the
country she grew-up in. She has been involved in
other cultural events in Montréal including: the
24th edition of the Vues d'Afrique film festival
and the 37th Festival du nouveau cinema. A
declared MUTEK fan, her integration was smooth
and rapid.
STACEY VAN BUSKIRK
Stacey has been working in Music & Technology for
the past 13 years and has performed as both a
musician and a live visual artist. Previously
residing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York
and London UK, she has worked with the leading
music software & hardware companies, musicians,
producers, engineers and talent agencies around
the globe, and has lead interactive projects for
a variety of companies like HBO, Nutella, LA.com
and KCRW, the award-winning radio station based
in Santa Monica California. Stacey's role in the
team involves both online strategy and leading
the development of the renewed MUTEK.ORG web
portal set to launch in the new year.

FEEDBACK ON THE 5TH EDITION OF MUTEK.MX
Part of the MUTEK movement and presenting the
same type of cultural programming, the MUTEK.MX
festival took place this year from October 23rd
to the 26th in Mexico City. From the theatres and
casino in the historic centre of the city, to the
enormous warehouse redesigned for the event, the
several eclectic venues for MUTEK.MX pushed the
boundaries this year.
Several artists from Québec accompanied the MUTEK
Montréal team and we all enjoyed a
well-constructed and energetic program that
showcased a wide range of high-quality
performances. We would especially like to
highlight the outstanding performances by several
Mexican artists: NORTEC, CUBENX, FAX, ALGORYTHM &
BLUES and LATINSIZER.
During the event, MUTEK Montréal, in partnership
with the MINISTRY OF TOURISM QUÉBEC and CANAL 22,
organized a contest for two lucky people to win
passes for the next MUTEK in Montréal in 2009
including free transportation and accommodation.
We would like to thank our two partners for this
interest in MUTEK. Congratulations to our winners
ANDREA PADILLA and ENRIQUE CASTILLO!
We would like to thank and to congratulate all
the members of the MUTEK.MX team for this
remarkable 5th edition. Despite the limitations
MUTEK.MX experienced this year due to the
international financial crisis, it's clear that
the festival is an essential and active element
that helps develop its local art scene and
position Mexico on the international circuit.

RASTER-NOTON IN SOUTH-AMERICA
Great explorers of the minimal electronic sound,
the Raster-Noton collective toured South-America
for the first time in October. CARSTEN NICOLAI
and OLAF BENDER performed in Brazil, Argentina,
Uruguay and Chile, while FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER
joined the tour for their last event in Mexico.
Their South American included two MUTEK-related
events. The first was an event in Santiago,
co-presented by MUTEK_CHILE and the second was a
Raster-Noton showcase at the MUTEK.MX festival in
Mexico City. The tour was a complete success, to
an extent that surprised even the artists
themselves. The tour was documented on the
following blog:

ON THE AGENDA
CONFERENCE IN CULTURE AND TOURISM
NOVEMBER 13 & 14 - MONTREAL
Tourisme Montréal, in partnership with the
Ministry of Culture and Communication and the
Mayor's Office holds a conference entitled:
"Culture and Tourism, at the Heart of an Urban
Identity".
The objective is to evaluate the way in which
cultural organizations develop their tourist
attractions, and to discuss methods required to
attract a greater number of people that are
seeking a unique tourist experience. Experts and
cultural tourism developers from all over the
world will be in Montréal to exchange ideas and
get inspired.
Among the organizations invited, MUTEK has been
invited to participate and will be represented by
its Founder and General Director, Alain Mongeau.
MUTEK is an example of the positive impact that
the cultural events in Montréal have over the
tourist industry.
