Dear Spectre,

Yesterday and today, there is a conference taking
place in the framework of the Art+Communication X
festival, in Riga

On the to occasion of conference (and festival),
the next Acoustic Space journal (Nr. 7) entitled
"Spectropia - illuminating investigations in
electromagnetic spectrum" is published by RIXC
and MPLab/Liepaja University - as "refereeing"
publication for the first time.
It contains both - research papers (in Part 1 -
by international artists, media theorists,
researchers and scientists) and artistic
explorations (in Part 2 - introducing to the
artworks of the Spectropia exhibition, taking
place in Riga Art Space).

Please e-mail me, if you are interested to get the publication!

with the very best regards,
rasa

Along with the invention of electromagnetic
technologies major paradigmatic shifts have
occurred in the 20th century science. Since then
the density of electromagnetic radiation has
multiplied thousands of times as a result of the
increasing exploitation of human-made devices.
However, in the beginning of the 21st century
electromagnetic phenomena still remain to at
great extent incomprehensible. Today we still
know very little on how artificially created
radiation interact with natural emissions and how
it affects our bodies and living nature. How to
investigate something that we can't even see or
feel? Naturally we can perceive only warmth and
light with our senses, a very little part of the
total spectrum. Also the controversial properties
of the waves themselves - its' duality and
immateriality of this 'material', makes the
spectral investigations challenging.

In this conference, international artists, media
theorists, scientists and researchers will
discuss how the vast spaces of electromagnetic
spectrum that often cannot be reached by science,
are taken over by mythologies of modern society,
and saturated with artistic explorations.

The title "Spectropia" is used as a conceptual
metaphor with the intent to illuminate artistic
and scientific investigations in the
electromagnetic spectrum. The conference also
aims to facilitate theoretical background for the
SPECTROPIA exhibition (taking place in Riga Art
Space October 16 - 25, 2008), as well as to found
a bases for "electromagnetic art" [as] research
in the future.
