Recension / Review

.......................

A Hacker Manifesto is not a e-Pirate manifesto but a connected
manifesto which does not dissociate itself from the e-Pirates.
"Hacker", in old Anglo-Saxon (from the times of Enclosure): the one
who hews the rough wood according to its productive destination. In
the laboratories of the MIT at the work of the free software, the
hacker was the detective of the code, one capable of revealing the
useless sign or which it was necessary to modify so that the code
becomes operational or innovative. From the author it is to invent, it
is to have the guile of the codes; invent the new by making a line of
signs from the ancient to decipher their code and be able to modify
them, not by experts according to academic reductions, but by singular
and pragmatic researchers, may they be scientists, intellectuals,
technicians, artists, representative personalities, or simple
citizens. So, through redrawing at the same time an epic of the
invention and of the technique in our time, in a post-Marxist
hypothesis of the politics, McKenzie Wark's Hacker Manifesto is a
critical essay onto the criticism of the political economy, the
political economy of signs, and even the libidinal economy, by hacking
them for the criticism of the political economy of the codes, through
an active language of the metamorphosis of the structure towards
poetry: as a dummy machine.

And it situates itself by innovating both bottom and form, among the
lineage from the postmodern philosophical works which radically
confronted with it, and by pursuing its singular fertile road it is
also a joyful iconoclastic work against the representations and
against the ideologies.

The work borrows the form of the manifesto in the logic of the
criticism of manifesto as standard, by making a real performance of
it; its aphorisms recall as much The Manifesto of the Communist Party
as well as The Capital (op.1) and The Society of The Spectacle, and
furthermore all manifestos from Marxist and Anarchist modern and
postmodernist vanguards, among which coming from The Dialectic of
Nature it reminds by reversing the attributes from the first volume of
the work " The Capital ", of which it plagiarizes certain
formulations, as well as Debord's own. What are anachronistic semiotic
conjurations of the history from the social progress, its creations
and its conflicts against oppression, until our days. It is an epic
poem of the modernity that teaches the abstraction of the actual
world, where everything auto-reflects itself or hyperbolically
postpones the past by its current mix and its remix and by its
integrated cut up recurrence until the emergence of a new universe.
Such is as well the style which the author has given to his work.
A post revolutionary epic poem of actual time loaded with energy and
with irony.

Repetition

A singular criticism of the plagiarized configurations from the
desperate past and in their broken up reappearance : their rehearsal
in the inclusive environmental diversity till the emergent
transformation which every time exceeds them; because the invention
abstracted from the world is an infinite production of the instruction
and of the information. It is not to be anywhere tommorrow, it is not
the Utopia but the Atopia--the immanence of an unlimited situation: it
is today, everywhere...
Invention, recovery, oppression, invention, liberation: such is the
poetic rhythm awarded to the socioeconomic and meta-political cycle
with which the work joins, a testimonial stating that dynamics and the
always surprising invention and the struggles through return to the
credit of the people.
So the changing world would predictably navigate towards the social
reality from the heteronomy *, to say, a sort of meta-autonomy in the
new era.

That is revolution too.

L'auteur du livre / The writer of the book
........................................................................................................................

Ascii Culture and the
Revenge of Knowledge (1999 ; Autonomedia ; New York).

Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts à New York.

...........................

Born in 1961 in Australia Kenneth McKenzie Wark studies at the
Macquarie University,
at The University of Technology, at The Murdoch University where he
publishes his first analysis and chronicles as Journalist--qualified
himself as a "lapsed Marxist in the pay of Rupert Murdoch"--and his
first essays.

He contributes with Geert Lovink to the first review of nettime list:
"Readme! Ascii Culture and the Re-avenges of Knowledge" (Autonomedia,
1999, New York).

In 2000, he definitively emigrates in the United States, where he
lives and works. Since 2004, he is a Professor in Culture and Media to
the Eugene Lang College, The New School for Liberal Arts, in New York.

Several works are translated into several languages. For example ten
languages among which Slovenian and Japanese, for example A Hacker
manifesto figures in the catalogue of corporate publishers such as
European Feltrinelli, in Italy (2005), or Beck, in Germany (2005).
In an other fashion, under its French-speaking version it takes part
in a free collective translation and collaborative work, as well a new
graphic performance, at criticalsecret (2006-2007), bringing to the
publisher his first contracting work of typographic edition.

McKenzie Wark is a multidisciplinary and speculative essayist. In the
course of his books he can be with partner authors or a single author,
he is a stylist and creates a theoretical work inbetween the
philosophy, the epistemology of communication, sociology, semiotics,
semio-linguistics, a singular and evolutionary open work, which set at
its proper time. He integrates his own life, the pragmatism of
communication, the pedagogy of radical consciousness, the
heterogeneous materialist philosophy after the post-modernity, always
performing the contemporary writings as a proper activism that may be
too considered as an art. Some others situate him among the
post-structuralists.

Among the crossing roads of the author which could appreciably
enlighten his work, we can quote several creative brilliant
intellectuals such as Kathy Acker to whom he was close, a moment
before her death; he also says that he felt transported and challenged
as a young intellectual while attending of a conference by Jean
Baudrillard--when he went for the first time in Australia, in the 80s.
