Synapse 7 Arts/Science Residencies :: Call for Applications
ANAT is calling for applications from artists and
science and research organisations for the 2012
Synapse Residency program. Now in its seventh
round, the program is a core element of the
Synapse initiative of the Australia Council for
the Arts and ANAT, which supports collaboration
between artists and scientists. The residencies
are open to Australian artists with a
demonstrated interest in science working in any
discipline and/or medium. Australian-based
residencies of 16 weeks' duration that take place
during the 2012 calendar year will be supported.
Ýo ensure a good fit between the artist and host
organisation, a joint application must be
submitted. It is the responsibility of the
project partners to establish contact and to
identify the nature of the proposed collaboration
prior to application. Those with existing
relationships are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Synapse residencies have a creative research
focus and it is not expected that they will
result in the production of new work. The
residencies may also be approached as a platform
for testing and informing a more comprehensive,
longer-term research project suitable for
submission to the ARC Synapse Linkage program.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS 5PM, FRIDAY 24th of FEBRUARY 2012

Guidelines, including an application form, can be
downloaded from the ANAT website.

ANAT Makerblog now online
The rapidly evolving fields of personal
fabrication, digital manufacturing and 3D
printing are changing manufacturing and design -
taking it from the factory floor to your work
place or home. Desktop 3D printers, open source
software and print-on-demand companies are
offering artists and creative practitioners
opportunities to not only prototype their
creations but also to manufacture and sell their
work on a scale to suit demand. As part of its
ongoing research and development program, ANAT
has acquired and assembled a flat-pack desktop 3D
printer - the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic. ANAT's
Makerblog will document our experiments with the
Thing-O-Matic, provide information and links
about 3D printing and other personal
manufacturing techniques and discuss how these
technologies are being harnessed by creative
practitioners. http://makerblog.anat.org.au

Subtle Technologies Festival 2012 :: Toronto, Canada
24 - 27 May 2012  :: Call for Submissions closes 13 December 2011
The Subtle Technologies Festival is known
internationally for presenting work by artists
and scientists at the leading edge of their
respective disciplines. Subtle Technologies is
calling for submissions from individuals,
interdisciplinary teams and collaborative
projects with successful stories from artists and
scientists working together and the issues that
inhibit disciplines from collaborating. What
approaches can we take to foster inter-cultural
exchanges when it comes to science or technology
based work? How do we make scientific systems
more accessible to artists as tools for creating
new work? In 2012 Subtle Technologies is also
presenting a special symposium session that
focuses on work inspired by, utilising or hacking
biological systems. This will include work by
artists who are using live tissues, bacteria and
other biological process in their work and those
who are exploring enhancements or modifications
to the human body through transhumanism.
Projects which use concepts of biomimicry,
genetic engineering and synthetic biology will
also be considered for this special session. To
have your submission considered for either the
symposium, poster session or a workshop, visit
the submissions form site.

Media Lab Melbourne :: Sprint #2: Unconstrained
Call for projects closes 12 December 2011
Technological frontiers have expanded beyond the
ability of an individual to comprehend their
complexity. Yet, these frontiers permeate our
everyday experiences. How does your smartphone
function? How was your toaster made? What tools
do you use to earn money? How many different
forms of communication do you experience in one
day? How well do YOU understand the technology in
your life? How well do you need to?
Media Lab Melbourne is seeking proposals for
devices or services as statements on the
complexity of our everyday technology and
systems. Successful applications will work with
Media Lab Melbourne and collaborators to realise
these proposals during a sprint over 9 days
beginning on the 21st of January 2012. As this
is a collaborative sprint it is not important
what skills you have but how effective your idea
is! Media Lab Melbourne will support projects
with technical and production support. Should a
person live interstate and wish to attend, we are
also able to provide basic travel and
accommodation for the duration of the sprint.
Selected participants will be notified on the
16th of December. At this point there will be a
second call for collaborators to assist in the
creation of the selected projects. Applicants who
are not selected in the initial call are welcome
to participate as collaborators.

Consciousness Reframed Conference :: Technoetic Telos: Art, Myth & Media
Art and Consiousness in the Post Biological Era
::  30 April - 2 May 2012 :: Kefalonia, Greece
Deadline for Abstracts 20 December 2011 ::
Deadline for Full Papers 27 February 2012
Convened in Greece, the conference takes its
theme from the conjunction of telos and tele, in
the purposes and processes of art in the
post-digital culture. At the centre of these
considerations is Mind, and the rich variability
of consciousness and reality, to which technoetic
systems and syncretic creativity aspire. Papers
and projects are welcomed that address these
issues, and which seek insights into the function
of metaphor and myth in the emergent complexity
of the post-biological era. Selected papers will
be published in Technoetic Arts Journal,
Intellect Ltd
