Art Laboratory Berlin freut sich, die Eröffnung des kommenden 
Ausstellungsprojekts /My Dreams Have Destroyed My Life. Some Thoughts on 
Pain/ am 28. April 2011 anzukündigen.

Die Ausstellung, die dritte unserer aktuellen Serie /Artists in Dialog/, 
versteht sich als diskursiver Dialog zwischen dem 
irakisch-schweizerischen Künstler Al Fadhil und dem 
palästinensisch-amerikanischen Künstler Aissa Deebi und untersucht das 
komplexe Thema des Verlusts hinsichtlich persönlicher und politischer 
Aspekte.




Das Projekt /My Dreams Have Destroyed My Life. //Some Thoughts on 
Pain/wurde von den beiden Künstlern während einer gemeinsamen 
Künstlerresidenz 2005 in Taiwan begonnen. Beide Künstler hatten im 
Zusammenhang mit Konflikten in ihren Heimatländern Brüder verloren. Al 
Fadhil hatte zwei Brüder während der Irakkriege verloren. Aissa Deebis 
jüngerer Bruder Nasim starb im israelischen Polizeigewahrsam im Jahre 
1999. Der medizinische Bericht bezeichnete den Tod als Selbstmord, der 
Künstler und seine Familie stellen das allerdings in Frage.

Die Ausstellung nimmt die persönlichen Erfahrungen beider Künstler in 
den Fokus, die von Verlust und kulturellen Aspekten der Trauer handeln: 
Während Fadhil aus einer schiitischen Familie aus dem Irak kommt, ist 
Deebi griechisch orthodox geprägt. Im vorliegenden Ausstellungsprojekt 
werden mittels Fotografien, Installationen und Videoarbeiten die drei 
Todesereignisse und ihr politischer sowie historischer Kontext beleuchtet.

Al Fadhil arbeitet als Künstler im Bereich Multimedia und Peformance, 
//er lebt und arbeitet in Lugano und Berlin.//Aissa Deebi arbeitet als 
Künstler im Bereich der Neuen Medien und ist derzeit Direktor der 
Abteilung der Bildenden Künste an der Amercian University in Kairo, 
Ägypten./

Art Laboratory Berlin is pleased to announce the opening of the 
exhibition project /Artists in Dialog:/ /My Dreams Have Destroyed My 
Life. Some Thoughts on Pain/ on 28 April.


The exhibition, the third in our ongoing series /Artists in Dialog/, is 
a discoursive dialog between the Iraqi Swiss artist Al Fadhil and the 
Palestinian-American artist Aissa Deebi, and explores the complex ties 
between the personal and the political in the theme of loss.



/My Dreams Have Destroyed My Life. Some Thoughts on Pain /was first 
conceived 2005 by the artists during a common artist residency in 
Taiwan. Both artists had lost brothers in respective conflicts in their 
countries of origin. Al Fadhil has lost two brothers to the wars in 
Iraq. Aissa Deebi’s younger brother Nasim died in Israeli police custody 
in 1999. The medical report labeled the death a suicide, something the 
artist and his family dispute.


The exhibition focuses on both the artists’ personal experience of loss 
and the cultural aspects of mourning and grief: Fadhil comes from a 
Shiite Iraqi family, whilst Deebi is Greek Orthodox. By means of 
photography, video and installation the exhibition will explore the 
three deaths and their political and historical context.

/Al Fadhil is an artist working in multimedia and performance, he is 
based in Lugano and Berlin. Aissa Deebi is a new media artist and 
currently director of visual arts at he American University in Cairo./
