Invitation to attend Johannesburg°òs 1st conference on public art
11-13 November 2011
Since 2003 the Johannesburg Development Agency
(JDA) has commissioned 175 new public artworks
and installed them in strategic public spaces
across the city. This investment is to
give effect to the City of Johannesburg°òs Public
Art Policy (2006) requirement that up to 1
percent of all capital expenditure should be set
aside for public art.
Johannesburg's 1st Public Art Conference is
intended to bring public art practitioners
and commentators together for a discussion about
what has been achieved through this
investment, and what we have learnt during the
process. At the same time we would like to
discuss the future of public art in Johannesburg
by considering public art trends and experiences
in other cities, reflecting on the experience of
public art practitioners, and exploring the views
and opinions of those with an interest in public
art. The intention is to create a platform for
shared learning that will support the development
of the public art industry in Johannesburg.
The event is convened by The Trinity Session, on
behalf of the City of Joburg and its implementing
agent, the Johannesburg Development Agency.
The conference programme includes:
* Registration and opening session from 16:00 on
Friday 11 November 2011, at the Maboneng Precinct
in the Johannesburg inner city.
* A full day conference (including breakaway
sessions) from 9:00 to 17:30 on Saturday
12 November 2011, at the Johannesburg Art Gallery
in Joubert Park in the Johannesburg inner city.
* A choice of art tours from 9:00 to 13:00 on Sunday 13 November 2011.
