Cafe OTO presents:
*
Counterflows Festival at ausland in Berlin
*
A weekend of 'OTO' at AUSLAND in Berlin... with a first time appearance
from Korean acid folk singer *Kim Doo Soo*, American hobo songsmith *Michael
Hurley* and the incomparable voice of *Josephine Foster* before an
explosive closure to the festival with two sets from *Decoy* and special
guest *Joe McPhee* charting an unpredictable path between passages of tonal
exploration, shimmering beauty and rampaging high energy motorik. Having
only ever played at OTO before - It's a pleasure to bring them to Berlin so
they can work their magic there.

*Counterflows* is a new series of festivals exploring international
networks of underground music. This first festival takes place across
London, Berlin and Glasgow from 6th-15th April. Produced by OTOProjects in
Berlin and London and AC Projects in Glasgow the festival was made possible
with support from Sound and Music, The British Council, Creative Scotland,
The PRS for Music Foundation and The Goethe Institut.

*Programme:*

Friday 13 April 2012 - 21:00

KIM DOO SOO

CARLA BOZULICH/OKKYUNG LEE and GUESTS

*Kim Doo Soo *is the deepest and most introspective of Korea's acid folk
singers with songs telling tales of political oppression, alcoholism,
suicide, and a ten-year period of mountain seclusion. First coming to the
attention of the west via Damon & Naomi's Internation Sad Hits compilation,
Kim Doo Soo has been active since the 80s.

Carla Bozulich's *Bloody Claws* with Okkyung Lee and other guests. A new
project by Carla Bozulich specially for Counterflows.

Carla Bozulich - Guitar and voice
Okkyung Lee - Cello
Morten J. Olsen - Drums/////////////////

Saturday 14 April 2012 - 21:00

MICHAEL HURLEY

JOSEPHINE FOSTER

It is no surprise to find out that the unique voice of *Michael Hurley* was
first recorded for release by Folkways Records on the same reel to reel as
recorded Leadbelly’s last sessions. Hurley’s career has spanned almost
fifty years of craft and his newest LP Blue Hills is a testimony to his
continued relevance.

A rare piano based set from OTO favourite *Josephine Foster* whose vocal
style, according to David Keenan "...combines a facility for expressive
extremes comparable to Patty Waters with the precise comportment of folk
singers like Karen Dalton and Shirley Collins". Hailing from Colorado,
Josephine Foster began to sing publicly at age 15,singing operatic hymns in
the services of a Rocky Mountain log cabin church. After studies in
classical music she moved to Chicago, where she abandoned the idea of
dedicating herself to opera and returned to her love of writing songs.
Since then, Josephine has traveled around the world sharing her music.

DECOY & JOE MCPHEE

We bring Counterflows to a close with two explosive sets from Decoy with
special guest Joe McPhee. Coming together for the first time at OTO in
December 2009 where they instantly hit it off we brought them back together
last October for two nights that provided one of the highlight's of what
was already a musically mind blowing year. Capable of charting an
unpredictable path between passages of tonal exploration, shimmering beauty
and rampaging high energy motorik its a pleasure to bring them to Berlin so
they can work their magic there.

Decoy is the stunning organ trio featuring Alex Hawkins, John Edwards and
Steve Noble. Hawkins - whose early training as a pipe organist encourages
him to exploit the full potential of the Hammond Organ and Leslie speaker
is joined by arguably one of the greatest rhythm sections in music who
combine a gift for unstoppable rhythmic propulsion and beguiling sonic
abstraction - from furious swing to metallic klang and slapped strings.

Alexander Hawkins - Hammond Organ
Steve Noble - Drums
John Edwards - Double Bass

Concerts start at 10PM, doors open at 9PM
