Foundland: Critical Stories.
http://www.furtherfield.org/features/interviews/foundland-critical-stories
Annet Dekker interviews Foundland, a multi-disciplinary art and design
practice based in Amsterdam. With backgrounds in graphic design, art and
writing Foundland’s approach focuses on research based, critical
responses to current issues. While moving around in advertising, printed
matter, the Internet, and off line art spaces they dig up interesting
stories about Disney, SpongeBob and defected soldiers.
Foundland is:
Ghalia Elsrakbi (Damascus, SYR) Ghalia completed a BFA in Graphic Design
at Artez Hogeschool voor der Kunsten in Arnhem, followed by a Masters
(design) at the Sandberg Institute. In 2009, she followed a research
post-graduate at Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.
Lauren Alexander (Cape Town, ZA) Lauren completed a BFA in Graphic
Design at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. After shortly
working in advertising she went on to pursue a Masters (design) at the
Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, and thereafter an MFA at the Dutch Art
Institute Arnhem (2011).
Annet Dekker is an independent curator and researcher. Subjects of
interest are the influence of art on technology, science and popular
culture, and vice versa. Currently she is tutor at Piet Zwart Institute,
Rotterdam. Previously she worked as webcurator for SKOR (Foundation for
Art and Public Domain), was programme manager at Virtueel Platform, and
head of exhibitions, education and artist in residence at the
Netherlands Media Art Institute. In 2009 she initiated aaaan.net with
Annette Wolfsberger. They organised the Artist in Residence programme at
the Netherlands Media Art Institute in Amsterdam and produced Funware,
an international touring exhibition in 2010 and 2011 about fun in
software (curated by Olga Goriunova). Since 2008 she is writing a PhD on
strategies for documenting net art at the Centre for Cultural Studies,
Goldsmiths University, London, under supervision of Matthew Fuller.
