REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program for
new and experimental performance works. This edition of Studio is
programmed by guest curators Anna Oxygen and Nick Duran, and offers
adventurous audiences a glimpse at projects by emerging Los Angeles
artists, including:
KEVIN LOPEZ: THINGS I’VE BEEN TOLD
Recorded and live spoken text drive choreographer Kevin Lopez’s new
solo dance-theater work in which poignantly pedestrian acts and
jolting physicality point to a tragic and humorous moment of loss and
coming of age.
MAX MARKOWITZ: MOON LOOPS — MOVEMENT III, (FIRST QUARTER)
Written for a trio of keyboardists including Jason Golday and John
Wood, Max Markowitz’s composition Moon Loops – Movement III (First
Quarter) masterfully employs phrasal repetition to chronicle the first
quarter of the life cycle of Earth's only natural satellite.
PAUL PESCADOR: YELLOW AND TURQUOISE
Using various fabrics, everyday found objects, and colorful visuals,
artist Paul Pescador humorously re-stages two tales of personal and
physical dependency inYellow and Turquoise.
WARREN NEIDICH: NSA-USA: SOUND AS PROPHECY
Drawing from Jacques Attali’s Noise: The Political Economy of Music,
Berlin and Los Angeles-based artist Warren Neidich directs Ulrich
Krieger, Kevin Robinson, Joshua Carro, Gracie Devito, Rosemarie
Hertlein and Ashiq Khondker in a staged music performance that
utilizes graphic scores embedded in scotch tape and musical
improvisational interpretation to investigate the implicit conditions
of the recent National Security Agency scandal.
ODEYA NINI: IN TRANSFORMATION: FROM UPROOT TO WEB
A collage of varying vocal colors and changing sonic shapes is created
in experimental vocalist and composer Odeya Nini’s In
Transformation: From Uproot to Web, paying tribute to her Jewish
Yemenite ancestors.
RACHEL KAUDER NALEBUFF: THEATER FOR ONE AND ABSOLUTELY ONE WRETCHEDLY
SINGULAR PERSON
A mischievous experiment in intimacy, Theater for One and Absolutely
One Wretchedly Singular Person explores the reciprocal relationship
between performer and spectator. Can live performance ever satisfy our
thirst for true connection? Written by Rachel Kauder Nalebuff,
directed by Deena Selenow, and performed by Emma Zakes Green.
