Kristine Khouri is a Beirut-based researcher, writer and photographer. Born
and raised in Miami and Chicago, in 2008 she moved to Beirut where she
worked as a researcher for Walid Raad. Her research focuses on modern art
history in the Arab world. With Rasha Salti, she co-founded a long-term
research project called The History of Arab Modernities in the Visual Arts,
which aims to investigate the undocumented realm of the production,
exhibition, critical engagement and consumption of modern art in the Middle
East in the period spanning from the1950s to the 1980s.

SON[I]A talks to Kristine Khouri about the traces of modernity in the Arab
World, and about the changes that have been produced in, and in relation
to, the postcolonial Arab narrative as a result of 9/11 and its global
consequences. She also discusses the methodology that she uses to rewrite
regional histories based on the analysis of documents and the production of
knowledge.
