Dear Madam, dear Sir,
we are very much looking forward to welcome you for the opening of the exhibition THE BRUTALISM APPRECIATION SOCIETY at the HMKV on Friday, 7 April 2017 at 7 pm.
What is the exhibition about? In the mid-1950s, the architectural style known as Brutalism emerged in the United Kingdom. It is characterized by exposed concrete walls and building materials such as metal and bricks. Today it is increasingly vanishing from the urban landscape, since these buildings, most of which are not protected as historical landmarks, are gradually being demolished. At the same time, fan groups are forming—on the Internet as well. They include, for example, the Facebook group The Brutalism Appreciation Society, whose 50,000+ members work to preserve the remains of urban architecture of the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by the activities of this group, the exhibition THE BRUTALISM APPRECIATION SOCIETY is showing 21 international artists who are engaging with the Brutalist architectural style of postwar modernism as well as a selection of contributions from the eponymous Facebook group.
Artists: Bettina Allamoda (US/DE), Jordi Colomer (ES), Darco FBI (DE/FR), EVOL (DE), Darko Fritz (HR), Anne-Valérie Gasc (FR), Niklas Goldbach (DE), Freya Hattenberger & Peter Simon (DE/PL), Alekos Hofstetter (DE), Martin Kohout (CZ), Aglaia Konrad (AT/BE), Nicolas Moulin (FR/DE), Reto Müller (CH), Andrea Pichl (DE), Heidi Specker (DE), Philip Topolovac (DE), Kay Walkowiak (AT), Ruben Woodin Dechamps & Oscar Hudson (UK) and Tobias Zielony (DE).
Many of the participating artists will be present at the HMKV during the opening. The exhibition will remain open until 10 pm. The admission is free on the opening night.
The exhibition is funded by the Ministerium für Familie, Kinder, Jugend, Kultur und Sport des Landes NRW, the Kunststiftung NRW and the LWL-Kulturstiftung. Generously supported by the Wüstenrot Stiftung. HMKVs main funder is the Dortmunder U - Zentrum für Kunst und Kreativität; media partners are Heimatdesign, bodo and coolibri.
The HMKV team is looking forward to welcoming you for the opening at the Dortmunder U!
Best wishes,
Dr. Inke Arns
Artistic Director HMKV
PS: HMKV has been nominated for the sixth time for the ADKV-ART COLOGNE Award for Art Associations (after 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014)! We are celebrating this together with the other 20 nominees and are looking forward to the award ceremony on 28 April 2017. Keeping our fingers crossed!
PPS: From 7 October 2017 – 25 February 2018 the exhibition SOS Brutalism – Save the concrete monsters is taking place at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (German Architecture Museum, DAM) in Frankfurt am Main. SOS Brutalism is a joint project by DAM and the Wüstenrot Stiftung. For the first time a global overview of Brutalist architecture built between 1953 and 1979 will be presented.
