*The Readymade Century*
International Symposium
Thu Oct 12 & Fri Oct 13
Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin
http://hkw.de/readymade
Curated by Dieter Daniels
in collaboration with Annette Bhagwati
What does the term ‘readymade’ mean in view of the radical
transformations of the 21st century? One hundred years after Marcel
Duchamp’s infamous /Fountain/ redefined what art can be, theorists and
artists are querying the idea of the “already made” against the
background of new aesthetic possibilities in our post-industrial
present. The two-day symposium ties into the radical nature of Duchamp’s
gesture and relocates it within contemporary (post) appropriation
strategies in the age of globalized circulation of goods.
Five panels will open up new dialogues between theoretical research and
artistic practice.
With contributions by Saâdane Afif, Inke Arns, Kader Attia, Annette
Bhagwati, Lars Blunck, Martha Buskirk, Dieter Daniels, Simon Denny,
