Ars Bioarctica – Open Call

Application deadline the 31st of October 2017.

Application form here: https://bioartsociety.fi/projects/ars-bioarctica/calls/apply

We are glad to announce an open call for our Ars Bioarctica residency program at the Kilpisjärvi
Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in the subarctic Lapland for the year 2018.

The residency expenses need to be covered by the applicants with the exception for one artist/group
from the Nordic/Baltic countries (excluding Finland). The residency offers a unique possibility for
artistic work in a biological field station and in the subarctic environment of Finland.

We will select around 15 artists/artist groups to work at the Station for periods from one week up
to several months, the desired length of the stay should be stated in the application.

One fully funded residency will be awarded to an artist/artist group based in the Nordic and Baltic
countries (except Finland) with an art&science approach. The residency is a joint effort with HIAP -
Helsinki International Artist Programme and the selected artist/artist group has the option for a
short stay in Helsinki either before or after the stay in Kilpisjärvi (depending on availability of
guest rooms at HIAP). The residency is supported by the Kulturkontakt Nord Nordic-Baltic Mobility
Programme for Culture.

Since 2010 the Bioartsociety is organizing the Ars Bioarctica Residency programme together with the
Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in the subarctic Lapland. Until now
more than 100 artists, scientists, and practitioners have been developing work at the Station on
topics related to biology, ecology and life sciences.

The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station provides the residents with a combined living and working
environment, a basic field laboratory, internet connection and sauna, and the same possibilities and
infrastructure as its scientists and staff. This includes access to scientific equipment, laboratory
facilities, the library and seminar room as well as the usage of field equipment. A dedicated mentor
in Kilpisjärvi will familiarise residents with the local environment and customs.

To apply, please, complete the application form with its attachments here:
https://bioartsociety.fi/projects/ars-bioarctica/calls/apply .

The applications for the Nordic/Baltic residency supported by Kulturkontakt Nord must also include a
budget - the grant covers travel, accommodation, daily allowances and material costs up to 3000
EURO. This residency is meant for longer stays of several weeks.

The evaluation of the applications emphasises the quality of the proposal, its interaction of
art&science, its artistic and scientific significance, the project's relation to the subarctic
environment and its feasibility to be carried out at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in the
proposed time.

The selected artists will be announced by the end of November 2017.

Please, send questions to our producer Piritta Puhto, piritta.puhto at bioartsociety.fi.

Best wishes,
