*Statement from the Lukács Archive International Foundation (LANA)*

The Lukács Archive and Library (LAK) has been /de facto/ closed.

After the earlier removal of books and manuscripts, on May 24 2018, the 
Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences 
(LIC), the owner of LAK, closed down the Archive indefinitely—until the 
end of planned renovation of György Lukács’ flat, which hosted the 
LAK—and expelled the last expert research associate. The LIC has not yet 
provided any relevant information, either on the reopening or on the 
starting date of planned renovation.

The LAK still exists /de jure/, and at the meeting with the delegation 
of LANA on 6 June 2018, László Lovász, President of the Hungarian 
Academy of Sciences (HAS), denied that the HAS would like to close LAK. 
LANA does not consider this as a result, but hopes that the leaders of 
HAS will assess the damage to the cause of science and the prestige of 
the HAS which they threaten to bring about if they are not able to 
deliver clarity within a reasonable period.

This remains the case even if proposed legislation, reported recently in 
the news, unexpectedly threatens the whole network of academia: the 
government wants to take relatively independent academic bodies under 
political control. LANA continues the struggle to preserve the LAK as a 
site of research, just as the HAS still stands by freedom of research.

LANA continues negotiations with the HAS, but is unable to succeed 
without the support of the domestic and international community of 
scholars. We therefore ask you to follow, observe, and support our struggle.

Das Georg-Lukács-Archiv ist /de facto/ geschlossen.

Die Bibliothek der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (UAW), die 
verantwortlich ist für das Georg-Lukács-Archiv, ließ am 24. Mai 2018 das 
Archiv für ungewisse Zeit – offiziell bis zum Abschluss der in Lukács‘ 
ehemaliger Wohnung geplanten Renovierungsarbeiten – schließen. Sie 
entfernte die letzte sachkundige Mitarbeiterin, den handschriftlichen 
Nachlass hatte sie schon vorher abtransportiert. Es gibt von der 
Bibliothek der UAW weder verwertbare Information über eine 
Wiedereröffnung, noch über den Beginn der geplanten Renovierung.

/De jure/existiert das Georg-Lukács-Archiv noch. Der Präsident der 
Akademie stritt an den am 6. Juni diesen Jahres mit dem Vorstand der 
ISLA geführten Verhandlungen entschlossen ab, dass die UAW das Archiv 
abschaffen wolle. Die ISLA betrachtet das nicht als Erfolg, sie vertraut 
aber darauf, dass die Führung der UAW abschätzen kann, welchen Schaden 
sie der Sache der Wissenschaft und ihrem eigenen Ansehen zufügt, wenn 
sie die Situation in kürzester Zeit nicht klärt.

Die Klärung der Situation darf nicht aufgeschoben werden. Auch dann 
nicht, wenn durch einen in den letzten Tagen publik gewordenen 
Gesetzesvorschlag, plötzlich das ganze Institutionengefüge der Akademie 
in Gefahr geraten ist: Die Regierung will die bisher relativ autonomen 
Forschungseinrichtungen verstaatlichen. Wie sich das Präsidium der UAW 
in dieser Situation für die Freiheit der Forschung einsetzen muss, muss 
sich auch die ISLA für die Bewahrung des Georg-Lukács-Archivs als 
Forschungseinrichtung einsetzen.

Die ISLA führt ihre Verhandlungen mit der UAW fort, doch ohne die 
Unterstützung seitens der Gemeinschaft hiesiger und ausländischer 
Wissenschaftler kann sie kaum auf Erfolg hoffen. Daher bitten wir alle, 
unsere Arbeit zu verfolgen und zu unterstützen.

*Declaración de la Fundación Internacional del Archivo Lukács (LANA)*

El Archivo Lukács (LAK, por sus siglas en húngaro) se halla cerrado /de 
facto/.

Luego de de haber removido libros y manuscritos, la Biblioteca y Centro 
de Información de la Academa de Ciencias de Hungría (LIC, por sus siglas 
en húngaro), que es la propietaria del LAK, cerró el Archivo por tiempo 
indefinido –supuestamente hasta que concluyan las renovaciones planeadas 
del edificio en el que se encuentra el Archivo– y echó a su última 
trabajadora. La Biblioteca y Cento de Información de la Academia de 
Ciencias de Hungría no ha provisto ningún tipo de información relevante, 
ni acerca de la reapertura, ni sobre el comienzo de los trabajos 
planeados de renovación.

El Archivo Lukács aún existe /de jure/, y durante una reunión mantenida 
el 6 de junio de 2018 por una delegación la Fundación y el Presidente de 
la Academia de Ciencias de Hungría (HAS, por sus siglas en inglés), 
László Lovász, este negó que sea la intención de la Academia cerrar el 
Archivo. La Fundación no se satisface con esto, y espera que las 
autoridades de la Academia de Ciencias evalúen el daño a la ciencia y al 
prestigio de la Academia que amenazan con producir si no son capaces de 
dar respuestas claras dentro de un período de tiempo razonable.

Este sigue siendo el caso aún cuando un proyecto legislativo, que fue 
recientemente noticia en los medios, amenaza a la totalidad de la red 
académica húngara: el gobierno nacional quiere poner bajo control 
político cuerpos académicos que hoy gozan de relativa independencia. Así 
como la Fundación Internacional del Archivo Lukács continúa luchando 
para preservar el Archivo como una institución de investigación, la 
propia Academia habrá de defender su propia libertad.

La Fundación Internacional del Archivo Lukács continúa las negociaciones 
con la Academia, pero le será imposible triunfar sin el apoyo de la 
comunidad académica internacional. Por lo tanto, les pedimos que 
acompañen, observen y apoyen nuestra lucha.
