Die globale DDR – eine transkulturelle Kunstgeschichte (1949–1990)

Organisiert von der Professur für Bildwissenschaft im globalen Kontext: 
Kerstin Schankweiler, Lena Geuer In Kooperation mit den Staatlichen 
Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD): Kathleen Reinhardt und Mathias Wagner 
sowie der Kustodie der TU Dresden: Gwendolin Kremer

Die internationale und interdisziplinäre Konferenz „Die globale DDR – 
eine transkulturelle Kunstgeschichte (1949–1990)“ widmet sich einem 
bisher kaum erforschten Kapitel: den vielfältigen Verbindungen im Feld 
der Kunst zwischen der DDR und den sozialistischen Ländern jenseits des 
Ostblocks in Afrika, Asien und Lateinamerika. Diese Beziehungen 
manifestierten sich u. a. in Künstler:innenreisen und wechselseitigen 
Studienaufenthalten, in Ausstellungen ostdeutscher Kunst im Ausland wie 
auch außereuropäischer Kunst in der DDR oder in künstlerischen 
Darstellungen des ‚Fremden‘ und in Primitivismen, die die Konferenz 
kritisch in den Blick nehmen möchte. Des Weiteren knüpft sie an die 
derzeit vehement und international geführte Restitutionsdebatte an und 
verortet sie historisch in den Machtkämpfen des Kalten Krieges. Die 
Konferenz führt erstmals die vorhandenen Forschungen im 
deutschsprachigen Raum systematisch zusammen und erweitert sie um die 
dringend benötigten Perspektiven aus den damaligen Partnerländern. Das 
Programm ist entlang folgender vier Schwerpunktthemen organisiert:

- Auswärtige Kulturpolitik und interkulturelle Begegnungen
- Transkulturelle Ästhetiken des Sozialismus
- Gemeinsame Räume - Transnationale Netzwerke und Kunstinstitutionen

Um die Brücke zwischen wissenschaftlichem Diskurs und konkreten (und 
bisher kaum bekannten) Kunstwerken in diesem Zusammenhang zu schlagen, 
wird die Konferenz in Kooperation mit der Kustodie der TU Dresden und 
den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) ausgerichtet. Sie findet 
zeitgleich mit einer einführenden Prolog-Ausstellung im Albertinum der 
SKD statt. Das Thema der Konferenz hat auch für das Selbstverständnis 
einer post-sozialistisch geprägten Gesellschaft eine hohe politische 
Relevanz, insbesondere am Standort Dresden, wo die Debatte um die 
Deutungshoheit über die Kunst in der DDR mit besonderem Nachdruck 
geführt wird. „Die globale DDR“ möchte eine kritische Plattform bieten 
mit dem Ziel, bestehende kunsthistorische und gesellschaftspolitische 
Narrative aus einer transkulturellen Perspektive zu verhandeln.

Gesucht werden Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen (MA-Absolvent:innen, 
Doktorand:innen oder Postdocs), die zu den genannten Schwerpunktthemen 
oder daran anknüpfenden Fragestellungen zur ‚Globalen DDR‘ im Fach der 
Kunstgeschichte und Bildwissenschaften, der Medien-, Film- und 
Kulturwissenschaften, visuellen Anthropologie oder Architekturgeschichte 
forschen.

Ein Abstract zu Ihrer Arbeit in deutscher oder englischer Sprache (max. 
500 Wörter) sowie ein kurzer Lebenslauf werden bis zum 1.10.2021 erbeten

The Global GDR - A Transcultural History of Art (1949-1990)

Organized by the Chair of Visual Culture Studies in a Global Context: 
Kerstin Schankweiler, Lena Geuer In cooperation with the Staatliche 
Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD): Kathleen Reinhardt, Mathias Wagner and 
the Academic Heritage of TU Dresden: Gwendolin Kremer.

The international and interdisciplinary conference "The Global GDR - A 
Transcultural History of Art (1949-1990)" is dedicated to a chapter that 
has received little attention up until now: the manifold connections in 
the field of art between the GDR and the socialist countries beyond the 
Eastern Bloc in Africa, Asia and Latin America. These relations 
manifested themselves in artists' trips and reciprocated study visits, 
in exhibitions of East German art abroad as well as of non-European art 
in the GDR, or in artistic representations of the 'foreign' and in 
primitivisms, which the conference seeks to examine critically. 
Furthermore, it ties in with the currently vehement and internationally 
conducted restitution-debate and situates it historically in the power 
struggles of the Cold War. For the first time, the conference 
systematically brings together existing research in the German-speaking 
world and expands it to include urgently needed perspectives from the 
associated countries of that time. The program is organized into the 
following four main sections:

- Foreign Cultural Policy and Intercultural Encounters
- Transcultural Aesthetics of Socialism
- Shared Spaces - Transnational networks and art institutions

In order to bridge the gap between scholarly discourse and tangible (but 
until now little known) artworks in this context, the conference is 
organized in cooperation with the Academic Heritage of TU Dresden and 
the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD). It will take place 
simultaneously with an introductory prologue exhibition in the 
Albertinum of the SKD. The theme of the conference also has high 
political relevance for the self-understanding of a post-socialist 
society. This is especially true in Dresden, where the debate about art 
in the GDR is being conducted with particular vigor. "The Global GDR" 
aims to provide a critical platform with the goal of negotiating 
existing narratives concerning art history, society and politics from a 
transcultural perspective.

We are looking for early-career researchers (MA graduates, PhD students 
or Postdocs) who are conducting research on the aforementioned main 
topics or related questions on the 'Global GDR' in the field of art 
history or visual studies, media, film and cultural studies, visual 
anthropology or architectural history.

Please send an abstract of your work in German or English (max. 500 
words) and a short CV to: ddrglobal at tu-dresden.de
