Image Protests / Bildproteste. Digital lecture series, winter semester 
2022/2023, TU Dresden

The lecture series "Image Protests / Bildproteste" asks what role images 
play and have played for protest movements worldwide. The concept of 
image protests highlights how contested the field of the visual is in 
the context of current protest cultures online. It not only refers to 
representations of protest, but also how images become the cause of 
protests, how protests are led with images, and how images develop a 
momentum of their own and can themselves become actors in protests. 
Closely related to this is the question of the visibility or 
invisibility of protests and the economies of attention and power 
structures associated with them. To explore these issues, we have 
invited speakers - both from academia and the visual arts - who will 
focus on current image practices online or contribute historical 
perspectives on this topic.

The series is organized by Kerstin Schankweiler, Verena Straub, and 
Tanja-Bianca Schmidt as part of the DFG-funded research project "Image 
Protests on Social Media: Internet Memes, Videos of Police Violence, and 
Relations to Art" at the Technical University of Dresden (Twitter: 
@bildproteste). The research project investigates the aesthetics, 
affects and algorithms of contemporary image protests on social media.

We are pleased to announce that the lecture by An Xiao Mina will take 
place in cooperation with the Schaufler Lab at TU Dresden and the lecture 
by Moya Bailey in cooperation with the GenderConceptGroup at TU Dresden.

The lecture series will take place via Zoom, weekly on Mondays, 
18:30-20:00 (CET) and will include lectures in English and German.

Die Ringvorlesung „Image Protests / Bildproteste“ geht der Frage nach, 
welche Rolle Bilder für Protestbewegungen weltweit spielen und gespielt 
haben. Der Begriff der Bildproteste stellt heraus, wie umkämpft das Feld 
des Visuellen im Kontext aktueller Protestkulturen im Netz ist und meint 
dabei nicht nur die Darstellung von Protest im Bild, sondern auch, wie 
Bilder zum Anlass von Protesten werden, wie Proteste mit Bildern geführt 
werden und wie Bilder eine Eigendynamik entwickeln und selbst zu 
Akteuren in Protesten werden können. Eng damit verbunden ist die Frage 
nach der Sichtbarkeit bzw. Unsichtbarkeit von Protesten und den damit 
verknüpften Aufmerksamkeitsökonomien und Machtstrukturen. Hierzu haben 
wir Referent*innen – sowohl aus der Wissenschaft als auch aus der 
bildenden Kunst – eingeladen, die sich auf aktuelle Bildpraktiken im 
Internet konzentrieren, oder historische Perspektiven zu diesem Thema 
einbringen.

Organisiert wird die Reihe von Kerstin Schankweiler, Verena Straub und 
Tanja-Bianca Schmidt im Rahmen des DFG-geförderten Forschungsprojekts 
"Bildproteste in den Sozialen Medien: Internet-Memes, Videos von 
Polizeigewalt und Beziehungen zur Kunst" an der Technischen Universität 
Dresden (Twitter: @bildproteste). Das Forschungsprojekt untersucht die 
Ästhetiken, Affekte und Algorithmen gegenwärtiger Bildproteste in den 
Sozialen Medien.

Wir freuen uns, dass der Vortrag von An Xiao Mina in Kooperation mit dem 
Schaufler Lab at TU Dresden und der Vortrag von Moya Bailey in Kooperation 
mit der GenderConceptGroup der TU Dresden stattfindet.

Die Vortragsreihe findet via Zoom statt, wöchentlich montags, 
18:30-20:00 Uhr (CET) und umfasst Vorträge auf Englisch und Deutsch.
